Fan problem

If you guys can't help me, I'll try heating and cooling.... My car has been apart for a few monthes, as I cleaned out the upper intake, bead blasted and painted it, repainted the valve covers, had the fuel injectors cleaned and flow tested, fixed my cruise control, replaced my heater box, painted my resevoirs, and changed all my hoses and convoluted tubing.

Upon restarting the car, I did the normal check for overheating, popped open the radiator cap, waited for the thermostat to open up, and added more coolant when it went down, checked the overflow. I drove it home, and I seem to come close to hitting the red area temp wise several times... I think the problem is my fan.

My fan doesn't seem to kick on until I hit about 230. I'd like it to kick on well before this. What's wrong here, or how do I change this at least? Is this hard to do?

Can you lower the fan on temp with a new switch, or do you have to modify the PROM?

The '90-'92 are controlled by the ECM. Don't know about the other years.

Mine's an '86. I assumed it was controlled by the PROM in my car, but I don't really have any reason to believe that.

I have the 3.1. (92 camaro) What will a new fan switch do for me? Is mine not working properly? What is the fan supposed to turn on at?

I'm in lorain county.

In order to use a separate fan switch you will need to wire it into the fan relay or the A/C pressure switch. The A/C pressure switch opens with high pressure telling the ECM to turn the fan on. Disconnecting the switch will cause the fan to run continuously. Can also ground the fan relay enable lead to turn on the fan.

The ECM trip point is high, too high, IIRC it is 228° F, I don't have the source with me at the moment for the exact value.
