Thats rare. Reason I asked if you were running ratio rockers is they put more of a strain on the pushrods. Its always advised to run hardened pushrods with 1.6 rockers.

Since the car is still stock configuration, you are most likely correct if you severely overevved it- Lucky nothing else cut loose. I thinking maybe you might have a bad lifter also. Have you ever adjusted the valves yourself in the past- Maybe one was set too tight/ or too loose for that matter with a bad lifter.

to check the lifters pull the intake and rocker arms and push rods then pull em out. For ptting it back you tighten it all down so theres no lash then run the engine .. back out the nut on the rocker stud till you hear a noise then torque it down till it goes away and give it like another 3/4 turn.

On the engine-running valve lash, 1/4 turn to 1/2 turn after it stops ticking is generally accepted.. 1/2 turn is considered the safe bet. However, if you look at shop manuals for the past couple decades, you'll notice that the number of turns has been steadily decreasing over the years

And for the lifters, yeah, you gotta rip the top end apart.. upper/middle plenum, fuel rail, intake manifold, all go bye bye..
