If oil presure it too low, will switch not allow car to start?
Hey, I have a '86 Camaro 2.8. 3 years ago the head gasket blew on the camaro at 130,000. We replaced the headgasket, NOW the oil pressure light is on, so we think we spun a bearing. If we start the car, and let it run for a period of time, then shut it off and try to start it, it wont start...just cranks. I was wondering if when the oil pressure switch sences too low of oil pressure the switch cuts the fuel? I heard from someone that this is why my car wont start after the motor gets hot. Could I just unplug the oil pressure switch? What could I do? I just need to be able to drive the car so I can eventually get it fixed (new 2.8). Thanks

well i can't answer your question, but i will say this, if you drive your car with no oil pressure you will destroy your engin perminatly.

The oil pressure switch on any f-body (F.I.) is a failsafe back-up for the fuel pump relay incase the relay fails.
The ECM could care less if the oil pressure switch/wiring is even on the harness (same thing goes for the A.I.R. pump diverter valves).
If the FP relay is bad, the OPS will be the only thing that makes the pump work to make the car run.
Symptoms of a bad relay... no 2 second (it's 2 seconds for all F.I. cars) prime when the key it turned to thr 'run' position, starts delay untill there if sufficient oil pressure (roughly 5-10psi) to close the OPS.
You can test to see if the fuel pump is dead or not by jumping the 'G' terminal (lower left corner) of the ALDL connector with +12v.
If the car is carb'd.. there is no such beast as an oil pressure switch.
