4.0L inline six in an f-body ???
i noticed somthing whilen the boneyard about three months ago and was just reminded of it. some older jeep charokee's had a 2.8L V6 in them, i am told it the same engine that was in the s-10 blzers, and our f-bodys. my charokee (88) has a 4.0L inline six. i wonder if it would be possible to swap the 4.0L into an f-body. i would never attempt this, just asking for theory purposes. and to see if anyone actually has.

Anything will fit. Check out the caddy swap in the engine swap forum, dude cut away the firewall & some of the tranny tunnel to ofset teh weight. This could also be done for the cjep motor. Don't know how deep the motor is though, that might be the main problem.

Um, yeh, anything will fit, w/ enough time, money, blood, and guts. Don't know the benefit, eh, different that's enough. i'm planning the northstar swap right ow, but eh, it's gonna take a lil' work and a lot of time. I'd also think that it'd fit better into a camaro rather a bird, because of the firebirds sloping hood. Hmmm, yeh, maro swap possible, bird swap too, but expet more work, would be interest ing though.

Just a cool FYI.
Jeep also used small block 350 buick motors during the early '70s. I've been told they used buick 3.8 V6s at one time too.

Personally I'd swap in a 350 if you were going to all that trouble. Or bigger even
AMC/Chrysler (last AMC designed engine as you know already), did a really good job on that block measuring out around 195 hp avg for the HO 4.0L versions. (I also own a cherokee along with my fbody). If you'd really want to do it, go for it, but personally I'd rather spend bux on a 350 that does 250hp+. In fact, I've seen a few 350's in Chevy mag completely built that do over 250+ hp and one that does 330 for under 2500bux. Also, who wants to spend all that time fabricating mounts for that inline-6. That and with how long that block is... geesh.

Inline six's were known for there torque instead of there hp... I was thinking of this while I was at work today, funny how you posted... Also the Supras are inline six's... I think it would be worth swaping, if you can find a turbo 350 tranny

I was also thinking of something along these lines the other day. But transmissions. The T5 is not exactly known for its robustness, and apparently the T56 is a little work. But the Jeep had the 2.8, and it must have had a decent transmission, so how well would that bolt up to a thirdgen?

Its a big debate but one guy proved that the T5 was not used with a 350 for only 1 reason. Emission on the down shift were to high. EPA wouldn't allow it.
But after reading and reading it seams as if you take care and change the ATF with every oil change, don't do anything stupid like 4000 RPM drops a regular T5 can take the power of a 350.

One of the better quotes from the thread
"The T-5 is fine unless you powershift and launch with slicks, OR unless you're a moron, in which case, you can pretty much break ANYTHING.
"
But any who, its a thread worth reading.
"Why no T-5 in with the 350?

Anything can be swapped into anything, it just depends on how much work you're willing to do. Jeep 4.0s arent known for anything in particular, including reliability, so I really see no reason to go to all the trouble, even if you have a free 4.0 sitting there. There are lots of engines available that would be far better suited for an F-body. BTW a 500 Caddy swap doesn't require cutting the firewall...they'll fit nicely in an F-body, or nearly anything else, as long as you use an Eldorado oil pan.
