What he said. Also a lot of older cars have weak ignition systems and when they're beaten around up in the higher rpms, they can drop spark, which gives an incomplete burn, so I imagine it lets off a little black smoke from that too. Well that's my THEORY anyways.

Just don't be pushing those colors on the tach too often and you'll be fine.

Yeah, factory tachs suck. But I'd rather the tach be over than under. Most I got my tach to read EVER was 6500 on the old motor. The new motor I pegged at 6200 once when I burned through a gear real bad.

yea, i want to hook an aftermarket tach up sometime. i wanna take some video of a full blown street run sometime. i don't want to hear about 'it has 4.10s though...' trust me, it spun about the same after i put the posi and 4.10s in as it did before with the open 3.23...now but tires are spinning though.

This can also happen when there is too much oil in the engine. I've had it happen in my dad's Chev pickup when shifting.

normally when I'm off street racing, I shift at about 5000RPMs. Normal driving, I usually shift at about 3800RPMs

If I remember right, these V6's, stock, make their peak hp around 4600 or 4800 rpms or so. So I'd recommend shifting at maybe 5200. There's not much of a point in revving these motors up high.....they're not imports, they don't make power up there. So when you're racing you never need to come anywhere close to anything that could damage your motor...unless you're doing a top speed race.

Depends on the motor... 2.8's powerband seems to be 3,000-5,000; 3.1's seems to be 2500-4500 (stroker).

Highest I've taken mine intentionally has been 5600... I try never to go higher. Did it about a year ago- I thought i was in second, and shifted up twice to get into overdrive. Yeah, well I was really in 3rd, and wound up shifting into neutral! All I heard was a hell of a scream from my motor, and some backfiring, so I let off the gas. I'm pretty sure my MSD box's rev limiter (6AL, using 6000 chip) kicked in, thank gawd.

i run 6000 all the time with a stock bottom end. haven't had any problems with that.
