Need Help
I just has my firebird serviced. The bill was high!!! The service was for the "ses" light and the Y-pipe dounuts. Once the dounuts were fixed he said that my manifold gasket was going. He said that it is borderline passing inspection. Is there an easier way to fix this then yanking the manifold off. My engine is a 2.8. Need some help guys. Any of you willing to come up and give me a hand and I am willing to pay ya. The thing is, i don't know the shape of the bolts going into the manifold. He said i may need to have the heads drilled. What should i do??? Then they had to replace the egr tube. Could that have been why my "ses" light and code 45 (rich exhuast) was coming up? Thanks guys

Buy some pb blaster, spray the bolts down real good, let it sit over nite. Then give em a try. I tried pb after breaking one bolt off in the head. After the pb soaked they all came out very easy.
STOP paying a shop to do stuff you can do yourself also. Most of the time they rip you off.

Problem with exhaust gaskets is you cant get them in asbestos anymore. So they will fail sooner or later. Best to try and break them lose when the engine is nice n hot. Wear some long leather gloves so not to be burned.

at idle you shouldn't be getting vacuum to the EGR at all.
what you really have to do is run the morot and pull a vacuum on the valve itself with a pump, if the engine stumbles or dies, the valve itself is ok. if not, then you have to start looking at the passages and the valve itself.
next, test to see that you are getting vaccum to the solinoid right next to it. Find the line that comes off the motor and check for vacuum at the end that connects to the solinoid. if you get it there, then your source line is ok.
if you still thin kthat you are having a problem with EGR getting vacuum, tee in a vac line between the EGR valve and the solinoid to a vacuum guage, run it under the hood so that you can see it through the windsheild with the hood closed, and take it for a drive on the freeway. if you get a redaing at cruise, then there isn't a problem with the vacuum.
if you have a problem with code 45(rich exhaust), then you are more than likely running rich. probably a bad 02 sensor. If it hasn't been replaced in a while, then you should do it just because. sometimes when they fry, they read rich, but most of the time they go lean.
Also could be a problem with MAP/MAF sensor, i forgot to see what year car you ahve before i posted, but it's another idea.
good luck

Thanks. I do have a new O2 sensor in it. But she still seems to be running a little to rich. Any other ideas? I know there it no vacuum to the egr at idle, but there shoudl be when it is hott and is above an idle. The diagram in the egr doesn't move like it should. There is no vacuum going there. Where is the soliod you are talking about? Thanks
