Hello all, their is a nice 1988 Chevrolet Camaro RS that is being sold not very far from where I live... I'm not too sure they were any RS in 88, can someone shed some light ont his? I would like to know the begining of the thirdgen RS and the end.... Thanks

1987 was the first year of the RS, but I believe in '87 they were only availiable in California and not the rest of the country. '88-on were sold everywhere through '92

'88 was cali-only too. 89-92 the base model was replaced with the RS.

The 88 RS was sold in California, Texas and Florida. My red RS with beautiful red wheels has been good for 210,000 miles so far. Not bad for the little 2.8, which was all the 88 RS offered.

I had one from Texas ! ...I miss it now !

Well, are you sure it's only in these place the 88 were offered? I live in Canada... I don't think this car was imported from the USA, I think it's a canadian version...

Well, I didn't know about Texas and Florida in '88, but I do know in '87 there were california-only RSs, in very limited numbers.

Right, well.. a quick glance at the tech data section kinda settled this whole thing

87: 6618 Produced, California only, V6 only
88: 7038 Produced, California/Texas/Florida only, V6 only
89-92: ~250,000 produced, Replaced coupe as base model, V6/305 TBI

Well, now that you mention appearance is your concern, that's more of a special case. All '88s came with the Z28 body package.. so it could LOOK like an RS all it wants, but it's still just a camaro, and the only year with "Camaro" emblems on the rocker panel GFX. I have people asking what year my RS is all the time.. funny how there isn't a single RS badge on it.

My 88 had "RS" emblems on it , that came with the car .My window sticker also says "RS" package . I still have the window sticker , just not the car ! My spoiler was not the same as a "camaro" spoiler with ground effects , I had the one that wrapped around the side of the rear quarter panels .

Then it was a California/Texas/Florida RS

and damn I miss it

As part of an effort to produce an affordable, insurable, sporty Camaro, Chevrolet offered a limited production RS model during 1987 in limited geographical areas. Production employees of the Van Nuys CA Camaro assembly plant participated in the selection of equipment which included the V6 MPFI engine, body-color front, rear & side effects panels, spoiler &Z28 body color 5 spoke wheels. ("L" code in VIN)

RS models available in limited areas (1988 - 7038)
ALL 1988 Camaros built in Van Nuys CA plant ("L")

1989 RS offered in 6 cylinder & 8 cylinder versions.

I do not have breakdown of numbers for the 1987 year

I don't consider pulling info from TGO's Tech Data section an "assumption". Nor did I say anything about my post being better. I was just pointing out that I posted the numbers for the '87 year. Calm down already.

'87s got more of a sport suspension also with stiffer springs bigger swaybars, and quick ratio steering box than the following years. They downgraded the suspensions in '88-on as not to rival the IROCs handling like the '87 did. I had always heard that there were only 1200 RSV6 cars made in '87?

With what I stated from the Camaro White book, I wasn't able to find a RPO code, price nor exact production figures of the 1987 RS model. I offered what was printed in the Camaro White Book.
For 1987 the Camaro series was broken down as Sport Coupe (6)/ Sport Coupe/Convertible (8 cylinder) & Z28 Sport Coupe/Convertible, 4 separate car model names.
For 1988 the Camaro series was broken down as Sport Coupe (6)/ Sport Coupe/Convertible (8 cylinder) & IROC Sport Coupe/Convertible, 4 separate car model names.
1987 First year since 1969 a Convertible was again offered.
1988 First year a Z28 was not offered.
1987, Norwood, Ohio production plant, closed doors.
Options for 1987 were grouped into "Option Groups". In english this is dozens of RPO codes under one cost package.
With my Camaro book breakdowns, again, cost or RPO codes not offered. Some production figures were offered.
