V6 GM part numbers

Does anyone know the difference between the different 2.8L blocks that GM produced? I have 2 blocks sitting at home with different numbers spread in different spots on the block. One block has a mechanical fuel pump, one doesn't. Both have a two piece front bearing with the chain cover that bolts to the oil pan. Are these 1st gen crap blocks? The rear of the crank is larger (74mm?) which I assumed made them 2nd gen blocks. I would really like to hear that someone has some actual numbers to look for. Both blocks say 2.8 C, or G, on them, but its hard to tell. Both are out of 86-87 year cars. Anybody know?

sorry don't have numbers or anything, but the mechanical fuel pump should be a dead give away for a carbed engine, atleast in all my experiences.

agreed mech. pump would mean carb motor.
sure ones not out of a s10?
never knew they had carbed 2.8 in thirdgens just throttle body and multi ports.
were as our s10 has throttle body and my friends old model s10 had a one barrel carb on it.
we used to have a chilton manual had engine sizes try them or search for engine id numbers on the net.
i know jegs n summit sales engine id number books for small blocks but nto sure on v6 or maybe yur local gm dealer could help if ya called n give em the numbers they should be able to reference them for u

I can get you short block numbers, but not physical block numbers

If one has fuel pump mount, and the other block has same size crank, then it is of same crank/block style.

The larger crank was used on 87/88+ style engines.

Might be better off trying to find a s10 2.8 block. And had I known you needed a block, I would have sent that to you also. But you would have had to pay for shipping :P

Remember, dont use the heads off the carb engine!!

One of the blocks came from a Camaro, the other one from a Jeep. The Jeep crank is spun anyway, but it is identical to the Camaro block. The heads seem to be the larger 2nd gen style, and both have a solid rear bearing. I'll try to call the dealer to see if I can get some numbers.

if they didnt have tbi on the 2.8 camaros then what camaros did they put it on the 305?
because theres a special section on here for tbi ones.
instead of tuned port or multi port.

and i also wondering if hed had one fomr another vehicle n all so thats why i stated that about the tbi unit

Nobody has solid numbers as to what the difference is or how to tell the difference? Please stay on subject.

we are staying on subject blue.

i wished i knew on v6's because the chilton manual we had u looked up the i.d number on the block flat spot right on the pass. side under the alternator.
this was for a v8 we done.
and the book told u as to the engine size torque specs, bore storke displacment, horsepower and torque from the factory.
my dad was one looked it up im thinkin he might have started by what year it was but im not sure its ben awhile.
would that be what yur lookin to find out?
all the specs of it and stuff and what year it came out of?
id definatly try a search for the number on the block itself.
not sure were they are on v6 i was goin to say on the front type in like 2.8 v6 then the number u know or different variations of it on yaho or somethgin n try find it there.
if not id call up gm or yur local auto parts stores n ask them what u need to know or about an engine numbers id book

The only thing that I saw on the pass side was the letter "L" in the back and then the "2.8 C" marking under the alternator.

I just called the Chevy Dealer here in town, and he said that the block cast numbers are not the GM number. Those numbers are the manufacturers specific numbers. From there, GM uses those numbers in reference to another book somewhere. So a number for a number. I'll get to the bottom of this eventually.

I had not intended to be rude. I'm just searching for some

I'll see if the guys at....dare I say it......60*V6 have any suggestions.

I did contact Chevy (1800-222-1020), in particular, Synthia Slat (sounded hot!) She said that she'd look up the numbers for me. So anyone else have an easy way to tell what I've got?

Oh trust me I know. Same thing happened at my old work. Receptionist could just about melt you over the phone. See her in person and ...WTF? I think she ate the hot chick and stole her voice LOL!!

She said she would help though. So when I get home tonight I have to write down some numbers. I know on my block in my 89, there is an 8 digit number above the water pump. I'll have to check the other blocks as well and give her all 3 or call dealer back and see what they can tell me. I'll be sure to post them. Thanks for your help on this! Someone should sticky this useful information somewhere.
