More exhaust questions!

Sorry for harping on this. I did a few searches and didnt find much of anything.

Anyways, im looking for a better flowing, affordable exhaust kit for my car. So far I have only found dynomax to sell a complete kit for the 2.8/3.1. My questions are:

- Anyone else make a good affordable exhaust system for this motor?

- The dynomax kit has a 2 1/2 int pipe. I thought that was the stock size. What makes them flow better, the bends?

-Will I notice any gains from just pipes? (Not looking for miracles. This is mostly cosmetic and sound with *hopefully* some performance gains.)

Thanks again for your patience!

i think that is stock size, and most will argue that any bigger is way too big for our motor. the pipes are "mandrel" bent, as opposed to the crimped stock bends. maybe the muffler has better flow too?? i wouldnt know about gains, as i am looking for exhaust myself! as far as systems for this motor, i could be wrong, and i hope someone will correct me, but i assume that the exhaust systems are not much different other than pipe size (and dual cat cars, of course) than a v8 system. if i remember correctly, isnt the dynomax for our cars also for some 305 cars?

I've done flowmaster 40 for muffler and dynomax high flow cat and it didn't give much of an increase in power and performance, at least not enough to notice really. It's definatly louder and the tips are higher up then they were stock so they scrap less but still scrap enough for me to want to change the setup. I think if you really want a gain from exhaust you have to do it all, including headers. I got 3 inch pipe going back too.

3 inch pipe will start to lose power. 2.5 inch is optimal size and if I recall correctly, stock is actually 2.25 inch. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on the stock size.

my dynomax does look at hair larger then the y-pipe. But it may be visual tricks.

As above, all mandrel bend. I like the sound of mine, at idle it does sound v8'ish (been asked that), but once you hammer it good, it gets the ol v6 sound back in it. I installed it on the car before I ever put mine on the road, so I can not give accurate performance "seat of pants" quote.
