Exhaust, no. Tranny, no. Ecm, yes. You must use the fuel injectors for whatever motor you get. 3.4 is reccomended. There's a whole bunch of info on 3.4 swaps available by searching.

It's a smaller, less powerful engine.. of course it's not worth it.. but then again, it's likely more powerful than a 5-cylinder 3.1
better be a smokin' deal with that kinda milage, though.. and I don't mean smokin' out the tailpipe, cuz a 2.8 with that many miles and years is likely to give a puff now and then regardless of how it's been treated.

yeah the power issue isnt a big deal, he just needs his car back and running, his future planz are for a v8, but dosent have the funds to go that way right now, if a 2.8 will work we may do that, and its nothing to throw some valve seals in to it!

IMO it would depend on what that "knock" is.
It may be easy enough to leave the pistons in, and just replace the bearings, put it back together.
Some of the 2.8's are very bad, and I wouldnt advise installing. That 1986 2.8 is externally balanced, and possibly the small main one.
I would search for a 3.4
, or do a quickie rebuild on that 3.1.
