Got my car back from the trans shop again today and more questions now!

Hello Everyone,

I just had the trans in my 89 2.8v6 rebuilt (76,000 miles). They used a aftermarket TV cable which wouldnt work on my car to start with.

They got a new factory one and installed it. The car will kick down now, but it kick's into the next higher gear at 5k and not the 5500K it used to do.

Also when I hit 60Mph now it kicks out of 2nd and into drive, before I had it rebuilt it wouldnt kick out of 2nd till like 70-75Mph.

I am guessing that its working the way it should be now?

Just seems like its shifting into the next hear a little too soon still, maybe it was because the Trans was due for the rebuild was why it would hold so much longer before

Thanks for any input on this

Donnie H.

Yes, 60mph is a normal 2-3 shiftpoint. And while the 5000 rpm shift point is a little low, TV cable might just need to be adjusted to fix that..

Ok, I tried to adjust the cable like it said in the how to guides here. And well its adjusted to what it say's is right! what could it be? here is a chart of how my car is shifting to give more ideals for help

1-2 gear is at 30mph@4000rpm's
2-3rd is at 60Mph@5100rpm's
of course I wouldnt know about the higher speeds till i get around to going out of town (live in Tucson) too many snow birds still here to run over right now.

It just seems like the rpm's are a little low for it to be shifting. any fix's and ideals are great

Thanks

Yes thats my thoughts also! I adjusted it back as far as I can get it to go tho. I did the steps just like it shows on here and still have a wimpy 4k shift from 1-2 at WOT, geez would think after a 900.00 trans job they would at leate get something as simple as this correct.

I have a year unlimted mileage on the rebuild. Is shifting too early bad for the trans like its doing, or is it only oif it shifts late thats bad and will damage them over time?

If the shifting early like mines doing, how long will it take before it kills the new rebuild? I have taken the car back twice now and first time they replaced the funky aftermarket cable they installed which let it go into overdrive at 20 with the factory one.

I just want it to die before the year is up if its going to die from shifting too early like its doing since last time they said its running like it should and I was just used to the wore out bad trans.

Thanks for the help

When you adjusted it...you're saying you PULLED the cable out as far as it can go? Or PUSHED it back? Pulling it out should RAISE the pressure. You'll notice firmer shifts.....

As far as shift POINTS go...well, I hear different from everybody I talk to. Most people *I* know say that low line pressure will result in late shifts. But in my case, on my Ford transmission running virtually no line pressure, it resulted in severely EARLY shifts.

Now if the pressure is too low, yes, this will cause damage. It causes excessive wear in the clutches and can result in an overheating transmission as well.

Pressure that's too high....well, it generally won't DAMAGE things, so much as cause fluid leaks and blow-out of transmission seals.

I'd take it back again. Tell them it's not doing what it's supposed to be doing. If they argue with you, tell them you paid for a STOCK rebuild and it's shifting worse than STOCK, so fix it.
