Any advice on dropping a gas tank?

I am on vacation in 2 weeks and I am going to try to find a gas leak.I'm thinking it might be on top at the rubber hoses that come off the fuel pump.I am going top run the gas pretty low,if not out all the way, before i drop the tank. How hard is is to drop one?I don't think the heat shield is going to be much of a problem.Any suggesstions?

Advice?

Use a lift! LOL. Nah, jus kidding. YOu will need two very tall jackstands though. Get it up off the ground as high as possible. It's going to be a pain to manuever it out and in, other than that, it isn't much of a problem. It would also be wise to replacve the fuel pump when you have it out. Replace the O ring in the top of the tank, and if any of the return lines look bad, change them too.

Is this a '91 car, by any chance? There was a recall for the filler neck, the welds were poorly done and could leak.

Yes, it's a '91 camaro. But is'nt that recall kinda old. They probably won't fix it.I won't know till I take off the heat shield and look around the filler neck.

i'd ask a gm dealer about the recall before i did any work on it myself. dropping the tank isn't that bad, what does suck is dealing with the exhaust.

yeah. i had a new cat put on last week. i went back to the bolt on flanges instead of wealding. i changed the fuel pump and while wrestling thetank in and out i bent the neck and now it leaks. but when i get a new tank it will be easy to put in since i can now remove my catback.

NHTSA Recalls have an *infinite* shelf life. The dealer will likely dick you around, but a couple calls to General Motors will fix their attitude very quickly. (GM is liable for injuries that occur due to recall work not being performed... the dealership gets nothing from it and won't want to do it, but GM doesn't want to get sued. GM is far higher in the food chain than their franchise dealerships... basically the conversation goes "How'd you like to not be a GM dealership anymore?")

I had a friend with a '91, that's how I know about the recall- but the dealer wouldn't cover his. Don't know why; I would've argued like hell- but they said his VIN wasn't in the list- even though the fuel was dripping from the filler neck welds at the tank body. Anyway he didn't want to fight anything (but I sure would've if it was my car!!) so we got some of that gas tank patch stuff, and used it to patch the leaks. It's an option... let us know how it goes with the dealer!

And don't be afraid to call multiple dealers...
