harmonic balancer
My harmonic balancer just went. The rubber is gone. Now the outer part is spinning and making noise. Also my car isn't running good at all. My questions are; will it hurt the engine if I drive around for a few days with out it, and when replacing the old one how do I know where the balancer goes in? is there a mark on the inner piece that will tell me, so that I can put the new one in the same position?

I definitely would NOT drive around w/ a faulty harmonic balancer. The balancer's purpose is to absorb/eliminate any torsional stress that occurs to the engine's rotating assembly (mainly the crank).
There is a keyway on the balancer; it'll only go on ONE way.
The crank has a raised insert (key) that fits into the long slot (keyway) on the harmonic balancer.
When you have a look, you'll know what I'm talking about.
Get a 'gear puller' (steering wheel puller) to remove the old balancer. If the rubber is broken, the unit may come out in 2 pieces.
Tap the new balancer/dampner back on w/ a block of wood and a hard rubber mallet. Never hit the balancer directly w/ a steel hammer.
