Tired of sensors thinking about going carbed
well with the idle problem i have , i'm thinking it might just be easier to get another 2.8 rebuild it and go carbed.
anyone think this is a bad idea? i'm kinda looking for feedback on what kinda gas milage i'd be looking at as well as power
right now with my car running in a so so shape i get about 18 mpg
470km a tank
thinking carbed might just be the easier solution to all my problems for a daily driver

If you are thinking of going carbed, you're better off starting with a 3.4 and getting the aftermarket intake manifold and a 4bbl adaptor. I think 400-500 cfm would work well. Might as well add a cam while you're at it, its cheap. Oh yeah, and if you do let me know how it runs, I've been seriously considering it too.

i was gonna go with a 3.4 but around here they are about as rare as anything comes, so i'm thinking about just sticking with a 2.8
aftermarket edelbrock intake is what i was gonna go with, and i was gonna rebuild the 2.8 from the ground up.

If you are rebuilding the 2.8 'from the ground up' then go with a 3.1 crank/pistons!

what if i could get my hands on the 3.1? if i'm going carbed i wouldn't beed to worry about the sensors and crap. just need a new flywheel and clutch i'm assuming?

Nope, smart car guys run 02 sensors even on carbed cars. All you need is a $7 volt meter to read it. its a simple principle that makes them work.
read this page. It is about Holley tuning but most of the stuff about using the 02 sensor for tuning. Will work on any car.
Id love it if I could get an 02 small enough to put them on my motorcycle. But cheap cars ones would stick out like sore thumbs.

An 02 sensor and a vacuum gauge is the carb tuners best friend.
I know several people who don't even use timing lights.
They vacuum time their cars.

i'm pretty dead set on this now, all these sensors are really pissing me off i figure i can a carb tuned easier and faster

Kretos, i just bought a 2.8 from a junkyard on scott road last week. Came from a 89 camaro, 150k on it looks clean. I also got three MINT mags with 2 near new tires all for $680 (damn $80 taxes). Plus they give 4 month warranty. From A central. Soon will be installed in my car. The motor looks like it has had work done on it. The block has been repainted and the water pump is blue... we'll see...
Keep the factory stuff
Seek out a S-10 or Blazer up to 1985 for carb set up. No ecm or sensors.
For your performance set up, double the base EFE element (the carb fuel mixture plate), effectivly raising the carb higher. Better fuel atomization that way. Big problem with that, tho, is finding correct length bolts. The rest of factory intake is nearly identical to edelbrock set up. Minus versatiltiy of carb base swaps.
Keep MPFI heads, they have larger valves.
Use the Crane 2030 cam set up with new springs & you're good to go.
On carb plan on rebushing the primary shaft on carb base
My 3.4 powered 1985 Blazer

The Blazer has not yet realized real world driving.
I can say the torque I feel is a massive improvement over what was pulled outta my Blazer, the 211,600 mile 2.8!
I'm about ready to start driving Blazer shortly.
I'll take the MPFI FIrebird set up tho.
Power much better w/3.4 under that MPFI set up.
I keep the Blazer stock due to smog laws in CA.
IF my Blazer tops 95MPH, then I'll know I got more power.
95MPH was Blazer top speed w/carb'd 2.8 set up, many miles ago!
