Spinning bad in auto cross, need a posi!!

Ok, its been a while since I posted on here but in the meantime I did get around to racing in my first autocross race. I really enjoyed racing in it especially because some corvette club was there and there were some awesome vettes there.

Well anyway, my car did really well. I think it had a lot left in it if there was a more experienced driver in it and if it had a POSI!! Whenever I came out of a corner my inside tire would be spinning like crazy!!

There are a few local junkyards around with a good bit of thirdgens but how do I ID a posi rear?

Would a stock posi rear be the way to go for a college kid on a budget? or should I get a locker or something like that?

To set up a really good rear can run up to $1,000.
Scope out the 1990 & up rears.
Better axles & pumpkins
Other option WITH WORK is a 4th Gen rear.
Modification to emergency brake assembly is required for that swap (I hear).
Keep an eye out for a 1966 Corvette Roadster, white/red interior 4-speed. That's my old ride. If ya see a White & tan leather 1974 Corvete T Top, let me know too. My Dads old ride.

Go to a junk yard, and take the 28 spline axles out of a later thirdgen, and take the posi out of a 4th gen in the yard. Easy way to go. Make sure everything is the same series though, for the gears.

Yep. SLP Take Off Posi (Zexel Torson) = $99 + s/h

Set of 28 spline 3rd gen mid '88+ axles.

You're a V6? Auto or stick? 2.8 or 3.1? You're a 3 series carrier, either way - either a 3.23 or a 3.42 rear

Don't bother with the posi first. Go out and buy some very good shocks and struts to control the wieht transfer and you will gain alot more time with shocks upgrade than you would with a posi. When I say good shocks, I mean Koni's yellows, not KYB's- Koni's yellows have the higher dampperforces you need to dial and control the car and help keep the pressure on the wheels for tire grip.

powertrax makes posi kits for our 26 spline open rears for like $400. so messy ring & pinion adjustments either.

Yeah, but $400 vs $150?

Well my car is an 87 3.4 5 speed. I just put a set of KYBs on the front and i know I could use some new shocks in the rear but either way I really want to put a posi in it.

Doward, where can I get a Zexel Torsion Take Off Posi and what exactly is it? Is it a carrier and gears from a 4th gen? I realize this would be a lot better than a junkyard rear but if I can get a complete stock posi rear off a z28 for $25 what would be the advantage of spending more and putting new gears and axles inside my rear? Im sure a stock posi rear will handle the power from my puny v6 so why should I go with the aftermarket?

Depends on what year was the Z28. Later year/lower milage the better.
MAY BE A COMPLETE SCORE or a used up left over shoulda passed but didn't know.....
Keep the gears from the V6, probably a better ratio.
Not doing so bad so far.....

You can forget about the SLP takoffs, they are gone. BUt you can still score the same unit on ebay for around 100 bucks usually. The junkyard is where I would go.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the advice but I still don't know how to ID a posi if I find one in the junkyard.

If the car is opff the ground and I spin one tire and the other one spins the same direction does that mean it has a posi?

Are there caodes I should look for?

Is there any way I can tell if I took the rear cover off?

I think I am going there this coming weekend so I would appreciate responses asap.
