which v6 do i have?

k this prob sounds really sad. I got my camaro a couple years ago. it has 200,000 on it and they put a new engine in it with 30,000 miles on it. It wuz a 1990 so originally it had a 3.1. I'm wondering if maybe the swapped a 3.4 or maybe even a 2.8 (hopefully not). Is there ne kind of way i can find out which it is

thanks.

By looking at the intake manifold you should be able to tell, A 2.8 will say it on there, not sure about the 3.1 or 3.4's though. IF it looks like your old motor, the 3.1 then its probably a 3.1. Thats what they should've replaced it with.

look at the intake, if its the 3.1 then its most likely a 3.1, the only real way to tell is to check the engine casting number

If they swapped engines im sure they didnt change intakes. Maybe you can locate the vin on the block you have now and run that. Where it is located that i dont know.

Agreed. They used my stock top end when mine was rebuilt. We used the stock top end on my 3.4 swap. Kept the computer compatible.

What year was the swap done? Cause in 98 I had block probs. The dealer rebuilt the 2.8 cause there were no 2.8 f-body block avail...only s10.

Who did the swap?

The dealer, who worked on mine, was too stupid to explain to me, or just did not know, that the 3.1 was a stroked 2.8. So it could have gone in, so could have the 3.4, but that would have been too much work for them. I even asked for a bigger engine that would use my stock accessories...unknown to me the 3.4 was just that! Idiots!

it always amazes me how little people working at dealerships actually know. i went in a week ago to ask about a new iac and even a mechanic there didn't know what it was

Thankfully the last engine mechanic they hired there was a really good guy. Brent is a hotrod guy. Knew his stuff, unlike the guy (Glenn) who rebuilt my engine! Brent was his replacement when he got fired. Would talk to me and explain things. I learned alot from him! In fact, working there those few months last year, gave me alot of insite into what happened to my car back then. Had some talks another mechanic who worked there when the car came in in 98. He told me all about what an idiot the first guy was and that that engine never should have been rebuilt. He could not believe it had lasted to this point. Heck his comments are actually what prompted me to do the 3.4 swap. He could not believe no mentioned the 3.4 to me back then.

When I started working there as a service writer I figured I would have a hard time with the mechanics figuring I was an idiot girl. But Brent set them straight when I started. Not to toot my own horn, but i knew more about teh mechanicals of a car then my service manager. Not that that means much. Or that might explain the crap at dealerships!

None that I know of; at least in RWD f-body applications. But I'm sure that a hole could've been drilled & tapped to fit a knock sensor...?

Shoot; I thought he could tell by the oil pan; but the oil pan changed in '87 or '88 didn't it?
