I looked in my Haynes book and it does not show where the speedo cable hooks to the tranny. Help please. Also it is cable driven, right? If the cable is froze up then will some lube free it up? Thanks

The speedo cable has to be attached to the tranny tail, if your car has digital dash, the speed sensor should be digital, check it out first, and let us know what you got. I am still working on that, but I putted this project on hold since I am waiting for a new tranny. here is a pic to let you know where it should be located at.

 

Yep, you are right it is connected to the tail of the tranny. And it is broke. How come if i have a cable then why did i get an SES light for the speed sensor. And no i do not have a digital dash.

Make sure you are reading the codes for the correct car year and model. If so, it could be like that because when you are checking for the codes the car is not in movement.
For example, when I am on the highway, the SES light come on, when I stop and get the codes, it throws the codes 12 (Distributor), and 24 (Speed Sensor). I know that I am driving the car without speed sensor, but also it means that the speed sensor is not working at the time you are checking for trouble codes.
Now, if I go deeper through your problem, I can tell you that they (probably) changed the original ECM for a Berlinetta one.
So, first, connect the speedo back, delete all the codes from the ECM memory by disconnecting the negative cable from the battery, and drive the car for a while in the highway. Check again for trouble codes.

 

The code is set on the highway. This car was a one owner and the lady i got it from only had routine stuff done. I am sure the ECM is original. I will probabily get another cable this weekend and see if that will stop the SES light. Thanks

It will. 85 and later cable-driven cars come with a VSS mounted to the back of the instrument cluster which reads from the speedometer. No cable, no speedo, no VSS. Code.

 

The yellow box on teh upper cluster is the VSS adaptor for the 85 speedo cars

 

That makes sense now. Thanks guys!!!! I am going to buy one this evening and put it on then clear the codes and see if it happens again. Anyway how fast am i running in 5th gear, 2500 rpm, and i have 3.42's in the rear? Just wondering if one of yall knew. Thanks again!!
