3.1s acting up again
i threw a old set of tires on my car and one has a leak so i out in the garage filling it up and i go to start the monster up
and it doesnt sound right at all as if all cylinders are working or if i have a fouled plug and it started and just stalled no sputtering nothing. so i try again this time given her a little gas and she ran studdered a little then smoothed out but i let off thinking maybe its just because its cold out and it stalled. no hesitation just quit. so i try again this time holding the rpms and slowly letting them drop by pressing less and less pressure on the peddle. it will run fine at 800rpm but i have to have my foot on the gas and i let off and it just quits it doesnt hesitate. I have no idea why its doing this because the day before it ran great. also it spit out a good amount of black carbon. i pulled a plug and its black. this means im running rich correct ? if so what would cause the car to run rich ? and what can i do to fix it ? and if i hold the RPMs at 3k and then let off it pops i made a thread about it before but its still doing it heres a picture of where the poping is coming from

my guess is you're dumping fuel into your engine.. get your injectors/fuel rail checked out, and definitly replace your spark plugs. you might even want to do your wires/cap/rotor if you're at it... if anyone else has any input, go for it.. this is just a guess..

that's the egr you have circled. I dunno if that being stuck open would hurt the car running when first started or anything but maybe it's stuck open. Mine's blocked off with no problems running.
Yeah I similar problem one morning. Turned out that the Digital EGR Valve (pictured) got stuck open and was constantly dumping exhuast gases it to the engine. It would not idle but if I applied even a small amount of throttle it would idle fine.
Repair manuals say they are not servicable. I say bull titty. Remove it from the EGR adapter and check for excesive carbon build up. I also romved the bottom plate, but it was kind hard to get back to gether.
It uses a progesive valve sytem using three plunger. The servor motors are visable. The three towers in the pic. Just remember they are spring loaded. So you have to use presure inorder to get them back together again. After cleaning every thing, being carefull not to get any cleaning fluid in the motors, it would idle just fine.
Also be carfull not to damage the gasket between the EGR and EGR adapter stalk. A parts store said that it was a dealer item only. When i went to the parts counter at the dealer they couldn't find the part listed. I ended up going to the scrap yard and getting one from there.
Mine was burned threw and needed replacing, but they resuable. it may sound easier to just go buy a new EGR, but they range from $250 - $500 depending on ware you go. Most scrap yards will charge $75 dollars for a used un-tested one. Yard ware they pull the parts and test will charge about $125 - $150 for them with a 30 day waranty.
So i'd rather clean them, and replace them when the servor motors dies.
Edit:
This problem can happen with no trouble codes. The EGR is not supposed to function till the engine is warmed up. The ECm monitors for EGR function before the engine is warm, but has no means to determine if it is stuck open via blockage. Thsu no trouble codes.
