Odd idle

In my 85 camaro when i first start it the idle goes real hi then drops and sometimes stalls this goes on for about 15 minutes sometimes more. I have already checked the throttle position sensor and it was fine. Has anyone had this problem and if so how did they fix it.

Could be a vaccumn leak. Do you hear a hissing sound when the cr is running with the hood open? Could be a lot of things really.

I think it is a combination of problems as any 1 thing didn't completely cure mine. You could be lucky and just have a vacuum leak.

My surging on cold start finally went away...after replacing every sensor (except MAF), fixing a vacuum leak, cleaning the throttle body, cleaning the injectors, replacing the fuel filter, removing and reinstalling the eprom in the ecm, rebuilding distributor and replacing spark plugs and wires, cap and rotor, blocking off the egr at the plenum, if i think of anything else I'll add it on.

It has been running fine since middle of December, so it has seen cold and warm weather, 70*F down to 20*F.

I do have a hising noise coming from the motor and i have tried spraying water to hear for a different iddle to check for the leak but i am unable to find the leak. I really think the sound is coming from the exhaust not a vaccum leak. I also had the sensors checked and they are fine.

im not sure of the rpms because i dont have a tack but it will idle aprox. 500 or stall to about 2000 i think that is fairly accurate but after 15 minutes it idles were it is supposed to it seems to work slowly on getting in between the range then to the correct idle

I have just found out that if i take off the intake up to the throttle boddy and remove the hose then spray carb cleaner in the throttle body and clean with a tooth brush then to start the motor and spray some carb cleaner around the throttle body while some one feathers the throttle it can help and even eliminate the problem.
I will add to this after i try it on my car which might not be for a while since i live in michigan and its around 5 degrees out. but if any of you are having the same problem and try this reply to me your results thank you.

Now that you mention it...IIRC cleaning the throttle body was one of the last things I did. My idle was steady and very high after it was clean. (not that I didn't need to do all the other stuff too)
How dirty the throttle body was is why I blocked off the egr at the plenum, which I also cleaned.

edit: I remember now that I cleaned the throttle body when I swapped in the cleaned injectors. So I was never sure which had a bigger affect on the idle.
