I would like to add more power to my Firebird but I really have no idea what is available. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Ok maybe I phrased this wrong . . This is my first car and I really don't know anything about fixing up cars let alone up grading them. So what I am really looking for is someone to tell me what is out there and what each part does.

Nothing is really worth it except for..Nitrous..Turbocharger..Supercharger or V-8.

Do a MASSIVE Tuneup.

Don't feel bad, I have been there before. This is my 3rd car and I still don't know everything. My best suggestion for you is to start with going to your local parts store and picking up a manual. Haynes manual if you can find it. The have plenty of info on basic and some non-basic repairs and upkeep. Preformance parts vary. Best be is to ask someone and they might know the awnser or know someone who does

What I would simply suggest?
Pay someone to tell you condition of your car & go from there.
I mean IF ya wanna go faster but your brakes are shot, well.... there's a choice there.
ANd how much ya wanna spend?
Make your source also do a compression check. This gives ya a good guide of how healthy is your engine. Internally.
If you get good results your efforts for more "power gain" are greatly increased.
IF engine is aged, well, then atleast you know.
How to fix aged engines is long extensive list of options.
Get some solid helpful facts about your car & give a shout back, so we can toss ya more suggestions.
Realize this, your car is atleast close to 20 years old & many previous owners.
Who truly knows what they did to your ride.
That is called POS (Previous Owners Syndrome).
You'll be saying that, possibly often!
PS Some solutions for problems reported by your mechainc are simple solutions, but usually detailed simple paths to restoring original engine operting conditions.
