after market starter problem

I recently replaced the starter on my 2.8L V6 MPFI engine and it now makes alot of noise when it engages the flywheel. The kit came with a shim, but when I used the shim, the noise was worse than without the shim installed. In both instances the engine would still start, but what noise!
Could it be an alignment problem? If so,can you purchase different size shims?
If anybody has suggestions or has had a similar problem, please let me know.

I would return it and try anothe rone but it sounds like a shim problem. Did it do it with the old one maybe your teeth on your flexplate has missing teeth?
