heater core hose questions
This is probably going to sound like a really stupid question but how do I replace the two hoses that come out of the heater core underneath the hood? They have those weird metal crimp things on them and I was wondering how I replace those hoses so that I don't mess anything up. I'm probaly going to cut the hoses and replace them anyways but I don't want to have to replace all that hosing. I just don't know how those hoses go into those metal crimp things is all. It's probably pretty easy and I'm just retarded.
OH BELIEVE ME THAT IS A VERY SOUND QUESTION
NOW THE HARD PART!!!
Scoring those hoses!!
FROM GM
THEY MAY NOW BE DISCONTINUED
FROM NAPA OR OTHER SOURCES they MAY BE AVAILABLE
YOU NEED A STORE THAT DEALS IN GATES PRODUCTS!
SPECIFICALLY GATES PRODUCTS!
THESE ARE PRE-FORMED HOSES NO PLAYING AROUND!
YOU MUST GET specific application stuff!
To remove is, YES, cut (slice off) hoses and install new ones using NEW clamps
THE DIFFICULT PART IS
up front the "Y" piping, it's NOW aged/delicate
IF IT CRACKS no biggie
Remove it and have it welded at a radiator shop for $5! I have done that (broke it & repaired it).
WHILE YOU ARE AT IT
be prepared for a new heater core job.
It's probably time and add that to things to do!
How to install is easy!
Use motor oil (NOT WD40-real oil!!) liberally! to lube the inside of hose & also metal attaching tube.
This is a real easy job, that yes can go bad if ya goof.
Take your time. Hardest is removal! Wouldn't hurt to make sure the tube surface is as clean as possible, too! Remove all old rubber residue! Little scuff anding with sand paper/steel wool (NOT BRILLO! PAD, Steel wool!).
BUT PS
When ya touch the tube up front & the tube to heater core you are running risk of "those parts" taking dump, again just due to aging! Core, replace! Front tube, radiator shop.
Have shop pressure test the tube prior to reinstall. NEW Heater core, SAME DEAL, take to shop have them pressure test it.
I have gotten two cores that were "Bad"! just slight bad welds. $5 weld job patch & pressure test & back home installed!
You can easily do this.
USE ONLY GATES HOSES! Gates is original equiptment manufacturer (OEM) for GM vehicle hoses. Also Goodyear, too!

I just got hose from autozone and totally replaced what was between the engine and the heatercore, works perfectly fine
Success
BUT be aware that the core, if NOT replaced under your ownership, may be ready to spring a leak. Additional pressure and the movement of the core pipes is the reason. Hope not, but, if so, ya can twist the firewall connections to be a quick bypass until the job gets done. I did that & it helped keep car on road & leak free interior.
