Under the hood it should say what to set the specs at, then use a timing light to set it to the same number on the balancer. Move the distributor till the light flashes on that number. Thats about it.

Go to Sears and buy a 15mm swivel head socket
multiple extensions and grab the ratchet.
That's what ya need
BUT when ya play with that distb. you may create an oil leak.
IS IT REALLY THAT BAD?
Best things to do is check current timing mark
IF IT bounces, then ya need a timing chain replacement mission.
In whole scheme of things, this simple mission may go downhill real fast.
IF ya got an aged engine, it runs, leave it alone.
PLAN on many things for "just setting timing".
Again ya got a 20 year old engine, expect this.
BUT the end results of solid ignition system, is primo operation and better engine longevity.
Repairing the ignition system on these rides is best thing ya can do for "power".
And that means a whole package deal!
PS Sometime when ya think it's timing, it may be just a good tune up to bring back that spark ya missing (wait a minute, I'm talking about a 2.8 LOLOLOLOLOL!).

It's up there the 15mm swivel head socket & extensions & have at it.
Try to adjust by ear, that works well. Then go for drive to hear results.
If pinging, back off a hair & try again.
Make sure you turn on & off also. If advanced to far, engine is harder to start.
Then check result with a timing light if ya feel so inclined.

Once you get that bolt loose, make the distb rotate.
BUT retain the present "starting point". Go start car, get it to idle and give slight twist one way or other.
The clue is SLIGHT TWIST.
ALSO keep that bolt "kinda tight". But loose enough to...and go for a drive. See what happens.
But again, the magic key is "slight" and "bolt kinda still tight" and starting car, after you think you got it right.
IF all you say is new, you will not need "much adjustment".

That's why a timing light is essential.
