To sell or not to sell!

As all you guys prob know I have so much going on with my car. I"m waiting on the injectors from cruizin per. and then I'll put those in and see if that gets rid of the glowing manifolds. Not sure if it will. The car will need a clutch soon prob last me threw the summer though. I was looking into a Center Force. Needs paint someday, but latly the thing has just been sucking so much money out of me trying to keep it running. Never mind my 5 miles per gallon I'm only 18 in high school working as assistant manager at stop and shop here in town. Bring home about 190 a week. Trying to keep some in the bank and trying to fix up the car. My insurance is 2800 a year I have no tickets or nothing, but i'm young and drive a "Trans Am'. thats what my car is classifed on the title. "Sport T/A" or something. I guess it has all V-8 suspension options so its labled as a T/A. I know it does have WS6 suspension in it. Just not sure what to do. I kinda would like more power, but I love the car and the look of it. I have had it for over 4 year What do you guys recommand, if I could get it running great then I would never even think of selling it. It has 136,000 miles on it. Any suggestions

First thing I suggest is a GOOD TALK TO YOUR INSURANCE CO!!!
Charging rate prices for a V8 car due to "springs on a car" is such BS!
Next
after you get rates adjusted, see what it'll cost to fix it and do the math.
WORSE PART IS the selling will be "lower" due to "problems".
BUT get a signed statement saying buying as is & go good bye.
IT is aged, old, in need of repairs & ya got a long life ahead of ya.
Enjoy the life.
Sell on ebay for quick sale.

I would keep it if your planning on getting another third gen. Then you could use it as a parts car.

Yeah I have argued with them and was able to get it down to there. See I live on Mass I have to use local companys which really sucks for me The motor sounds good, not knocks or anything of the sort, and the body is in decent shape, not to bad from the looks of it. Not much rust at all on it. The floor boards need some work however, just on the driver side which seems to be a common problem. I'm going to put the injectors in see what happens when I get them back. Just right now its killing me and not sure if it worth throwing all that money into it. Like you guys said I would never get it back. I love the car to death and really would not like to sell it. But want your feedback as to what I should do. Any thing I should do to the motor? What would you guys do in my shoes. Yes i diff want another thirdgen if i get rid of this one, I'd like an 8 cylinder however would not mind a 3.4 swap. Just not sure as to what to do. Any advice here? Thanks

Wow I can't believe they are charging you that much. That is rediculous. If I was you I would go to www.geico.com You shouldn't be paying anymore than $1000 and that would still be kinda high. When I lived in MA as a teenager I was paying $750 a year on an 83 2.8l firebird. I was in a very similar situation as you when I was in high school, except I had a rod through the oil pan added to a bunch of other problems. But I decided to keep the car and glad I did. Yeah you will spend money fixing it up but you will also learn a whole lot as your doing it. And when everthing does run right it will be more fun to drive because it was you who made it run. Just my two cents.

I have often thought about selling my car because of all the problems and issues I have had with it. Im in college right now, and a car is pretty usefull and thirdgens one of very few cars that I like style of and I can easily afford and maintain. So far I have been accepting the v6 because it saves me money on gas and I don't know how ride a bike so I couldnt get one of those (someday hopefully).

I think what it comes down to is how much you really like your car and if you actually want to put the effort and money into it to keep it running. Thirdgens are now getting to the point where they almost need a frame up restoration and many of us have them has project cars sitting somewhere waiting for more money to get going on them.

Since you are so young and insurance and gas etc going to take alot of your money right now, Id look to get another car that you don't have to worry about too much. Afterall, thirdgens still bone cheap, you can always get one later for when you really want to put some work into one but thats just my opinion.

Okay...a couple of comments:

1) $2800 is extremely high, especially if its on a 2.8. I agree to just get liability...but also get medical (sometimes known as personal injury protection) and also uninsured/underinsured motorist. You don't need comp or collision. Get a real insurance company...

2) Keeping it and "playing with it" will give you a good education in cars. The first thing I would do is to find out why you're only get 5mpg...that's outrageous. Man, even if I stand on the pedal on mine I get better mileage than that.

3) In a completely monetary world, you're probably better off selling it and getting a fuel efficient car. Yeah, it might be a lady-killer, but if a chic just likes you for your car...she's the wrong chic. Now if she likes you because you work on your car...that's another thing. You'll also want to find out if MA charges for registration and plates/tags based on value of the car or based on weight. That makes a difference. I used to live in IA where they charge based on value. When the car got old, it was dirt cheap to get plates/tags for. I live in FL now where they solely go by vehicle weight. A third gen camaro weighs close to (if not over) 2-ton. If you get a fuel-efficient car, most of those are super light compared to an "old american icon".

Good luck...keep us up to date...it looks like we're all rooting for you!
