windshield wiper and arm almost flew off

so i was drivin in the rain - and i have always noticed that my driver side wiper is a bit out of alignment. like how it always parked about 1" too high, and hit the A pillar when on the fastest setting. my cowl cover doesnt quite fit right either , like its from a different car...

well i cranked it up to pass a truck and the bastard filpped 180* and sat on my door mirror. now i only have one working wiper and its supposed to rain for the next week.

anyway,

has anyone take apart the windshiel wiper gearbox? or how do i go about fixing this thing?

You have no need to take apart your selected choice of parts!
All ya need do is replace the arm.
Previous owners do wonders, don't they?
Get a part taken off the car, not you attempting to remove it.
WHY?
HOPEFULLY the wrecking yard place will also reinstall yours at no more cost than buying the part.
There is a proper tool for doing this job. Not a pile of screwdrivers.

So you still have the arm?

I'm guessing the clip just let loose on the arm, and you've still got the spindle poking up from the cowl vent. Like Karl said, get another arm from a junkyard and clip it on. There's a small lever that locks the arm onto the spindle; it's at the fattest part of the base of the arm. Swing it out of the way and lift up; the arm comes off.

You can also buy new arms at a parts store; heck just go to the store and look at one arm; you'll see the lever I'm talking about. I've gotta get new arms one of these days... the springs in my arms are shot, and the wipers work great wiping "up", but chatter on their way back down. And yes, the blades are new. It's done this since I got the car; the guys on the general tech forum gave me the scoop on the springs a few months ago but I've been too forgetful to pick up new arms (until it starts raining again)!

Still must remove the arms to get to the cover for seeign what's happened.
IT's generally attached by several small bolts by a "crank" on base of one side or other.
Get both arms removed to see what's going on. IT's no bg deal just a problem for access under cover down there.
One can buy new wiper arms? Great I need driver side myself. I get chatter also and RainX not seem to help.

You can buy a new arms for like $20. It come set with the spring clip ready to install. They can be a pain to reset, so don't mess with it. Just push it on and it will snap shut.

If the teeth are worn on the motor post. Your kind of screwed.

I wonder if you dropped a bolt out of the wiper's transmission.

Somehow your assembly came apart inside with the arms to the motor. That's what sounds like.
Even if so, the parts are in there (small nuts & such). You still have to pull apart yours to fix.
Either way examination is correct yours or a wrecking yard set up. But cause of yours failing is unusual unless it was previous tampered with.

i finnaly got to fixing it today,

this is how i did it

i found a newer thirdgen in the wrecker that has a one peice (not the stupid metal bar that sits inside the driver side arm assembly to ohld it in position) wiper trans, and i took the old one out.

i set the key on, wiper in the park position and put the new trans in, leaving the wiper motor nut tight and the arm knuckle bolts loose. the wipers resting loosly on the knuckles.

then i turned the wipers on and watched for the highest point where the wipers go and turned the car off when they reached that point, so the wipers are sticking vertical (and in the wrong -too far- position as to my problem). now there are 2 small bolts, 7mm i think, on the arm that is near the wiper motor. i loosened those and it gives you about 1 inch to adjust where the wipers stop. so while they are sticking at the farthest point of the wiper motor, i just moved the wipers to as far as I would like them to go. this moved the adjuster about 1/4 inch. i tightened down all the screws and bolts, and pushed the button to move the wipers into the park position.. OHHH YEAH.

take off wiper arms, put on flimsy plastic cowl cover and reinstall wipers.

Did it damage your windshield? My friend's eclipse had to temporarily duct tape it to the arm because it broke off and it was raining and he NEEDED it, but he had it on full speed and it went flying like 20 feet off to the side. But the stud thingy that it mounted to scraped his window very badly and he has a deep scratch on his windshield now LOL
