Found an EGR prob...

Alot of my trouble is that I found a vaccum leak around the metal EGR gasket. One of the bolts have broken. Can I tap the bolt to get a new one in there and what size\length is that torx bolt anyway? Can I use something else to replace the original metal gasket with another material?

not sure but i'll check the bolt size tonight for you, also that bolt will be hardened by now, so if you drill it, be careful and use a smaller drill than the tap drill size recomendation. file it flat, centerpunch the center of the bolt, and use coolant(wd40 or something like that), and drill slowly, otherwise you will heat up the drill bit, and kill it. i will get you the tap size and bolt sixe information tonight when i go home.

can you take a picture of the egr, and draw an arrow to the area leaking?

I'm debating on putting mine back on, and I know an area where a gasket is leaking. If its going to causing vac problems, I'm not going to.

My digi camera went out like a month ago.It was a cheap one so it was no big loss.If you are on the passenger side of the car standing beside the quarter panel looking down on the engine. The leak on the gasket is the side nearest the alternator.I know I'm going to have to get the broken bolt out.I was thinking as a last resort to RTV it to seal up the leak.Look kinda crappy though.Think I'll just repair it right the first time.

same thing happened to me,there's no room to get any tools down there, so i had to j b weld that side and tighten down the other side normally.... so far so good, and no leaks..

I was kinda wanting to know where the leak was vertically.

At the base, or somewhere "in" the egr.

i think the leak he has is where the valve bolts to the stem piece.

an angled ratchet extension will fit down there or a small box wrench. might be a little hard to get leverage and torque on it but it is possible. then go to a junkyard and pull a bolt out there and get the fel pro gasket from advance or auto zone and fix it right the first time. ur best bet

The leak is directly under the EGR where the egr meets the triangular metal-type gasket. All this is above the egr base that is mounted to the pipe.Kinda confusing...but I'll remove the base from the pipe in order to get the broken bolt out.

you should be able to drill out that bolt as everything but the egr itself is in the car unless you can get a set of visegrips on the bolt sticking out!
i think that 86blue hit it right on the money, get a brand new gasket, though come to think about it, i just tore mine off in preps for the headers and i dont' remember seeing a gasket in there. take a fine file to the mating surfaces and lightly rub it back and forth to get all burrs off the mating surfaces.

would also be a good time to clean out the egr valve and passages. make sure the diapragm moves freely and is in good working order. if not, buy a new one since they r rather cheap. the new one will come with a gasket but i would still buy the fel pro.

86BLUEBIRD, the 2.8 egr, and 3.1 egr are totally different.

Yours are 20 bux and vacuum controlled.
Ours is 200 bux, and electronic.

Now you see why he wishes to repair it, not replace it.

i never told him he needed to replace anything. i told him while he has it off to clean it out and make sure everything was in working order. i forgot to look and see if he had the 3.1. my mistake. all i said was to give it a look over while its off and clean it up.

jay i was the one that said about changing it out for the ease of it since it is pretty cheap if he has the vacume one, i know the electric ones are expensive.
