2.8 Engine fails after some time running
Hi all, 3 months ago my car just dies and wont start, after some part changes the car at least start when I mount a second hand distributor. It runs fine for a while and after some minutes it starts to fail.
I have tried several things as change the fuel filter, rotate the distributor and clean the cooling system several times with fresh water.
Now I dont know what to try, the ECM doesnt give any error code and the car when fails is just like if there is no gas, or spark, or air, sounds like it coughs. This only happen when the car is revved over 2000 rpm and if it is running, If I revv it in park position the car just sounds fine and doesnt fail.
If someone have any idea I will be so thankfull.
BTW the car have now clear water in the cooling system because I just want to refill and drain it to clear all the rust, someone tell me that this is irrelevant but at this point I dont know what is or isn't.

It could be the EMC. I had teh sae, problem with my 87 till I changed the EMC and now it starts up fine. After that the codes started coming. So give it a try hope it works.

thanks for your help, I have a used ECM for a 2.8 engine but its diferent from the one installed in my car. The "new" one have two conectors and the one in my car 3, the chip shape its diferent too. If someone can tell me where to find schemes for the v6 ECM wires I will try to change it (I suspect that the currently installed one its not original for a 2.8 and its newer than the car itself). Thanks again.
For the head hasket i think it cannot be because there will be oil leaks, please tell me if I'm wrong.

For a blown headgasket, you would a) either get water in the oil
b) get compression leaks into the cooling system (check for bubbles in the radiator
c) burn coolant (steam)
Did you check the coil? The coil on these engines is mounted in a very inconveinient place (right above the manifold) so it gets very hot. Maybe the failure is only evident after the coil heats up?

hi i will check for bubles and for water in oil (I just checked the dipstick and seems ok but I will recheck). The coil Is brand new (an accel one) so It had not to be the problem. Today when I started the car it had started to stall and finally I have an electric lost. It had been so weird, now when i start the car It just stalls and jumps from 1000 to 2000 rpms without pressing the accelerator. Maybe checking the wires In the ecm i had messed something :S. I', thinking seriously into swap the engine and ecm because It will cost the same that take the car to a mecanic here in spain.
Any ideas are well come:P
Thanks a lot

hi all, i havent fixed the yet car but today I had an idea to get codes from the ecm. I run the car once a week and the last day I pick it the ses light goes on, as ever when I restart the car the light has gone, so today I had drived untill the car had died and before restarting I had pulled the codes from the ECM, it had give me 33 and 42 so I suspect I have a defective ecm (the fact that the ecm only stores the code untill restart points me to that direction too). As I own another ECM for that engine I will try to pick a new wiring harness to give it a try (as I told before my car have a 730 ECM when is suposed to have a 305 so I will do the swap to original one).
As son as I get the wiring harnes I will tell you something so if someone have a similar problem maybe this can be used for future reference.
If someone have another idea it will be really wellcome.
Thanks for your help.
