B&M Shifter Install

Well I bought a B&M Sport shifter, part #BMM-80776, and I am having a hell of a time getting the shift linkage adjusted right. It seems like the shifter will only go four gears from either 1-OD, or Park to OD. The boot that connects to the transmission(the crappy drawing below), doesn't seem to line up with the linkage cable when it goes past four gears. I'm using slot F, the manual says not to use any slot except F for the 700R4 transmission. Would I be able to maybe cut a large slot for the F slot, or would that cause some problems with the shifter and fully going into a gear? Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. OH YEAH, the large purple wire that runs into the stock shifter, is that the neautral lock out switch? The car will not turn over without having the shifter plugged into the stock wire harness. There is a switch on the shifter for the wire, however I want to make sure it is the large purple wire first. Thanks again guys.

DO NOT MODIFY THE SHIFT LEVER!! Yikes. You don't want to damage your transmission, do you?

You've got the instructions, right? One part of the instructions talks about removing a bolt that changes the shifter from a 3-speed into a 4-speed.

Other than that, start from scratch with the cable adjustment procedure. Too many people rush through that and have problems because of it. Yes it's a pain in the butt because you have to get into the car then out and under the car then back in the car and etc etc, but the instructions lay it all out nice and easy.

Hey, wait. You bought the wrong shifter for an F-body!! Pack it up, return it, and get BMM-80692, the F-body "console megashifter". http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...rt=BMM%2D80692 The shifter you have will still work, but your instructions are missing the info for hooking up the neutral safety switch and reverse lights and etc. Plus that'll have a super-long stick that won't look or feel right when you force it into the stock console.

I originally went with this particular shifter because of the price, but after noticing that this shifter is only $30 more I'll be sending back this hunk of crap sooner than I can rip it out of the car again. I was also looking a hurst shifter, but that really is too expensive. Thanks for throwing up that link TomP, I appreciate it.

No problem! It should help a lot because the instructions are meant for our cars. Plus since you have a Camaro, the shift plate will bolt right into your console. (I had to cut my console top with a soldering iron because the Firebird console tops are one big piece- that's the bit about the "will not fit 88-92 Formula", it should say "will not fit 85-92 Firebird console tops without modification".

Plus at the end of the instructions it explains how to wire up the relay for neutral start and RPM drop and all that fun stuff. It was easy to wire up, too.

Here's a tip; when you open the box, dump the parts onto your kitchen table and go thru the instructions. When the instructions need a part, highlight the paragraph, and put those parts in a baggie. Seal the baggie and use a marker to write "Step #8" (or similar) on the bag. Do that for all the parts. That way when you're in the garage or on the driveway, the parts are easy to find AND you don't lose any parts by accident.

You guys want an easier less expensive route for a shift, Take to George Laura @ B&M (He is on these boards as "12secSS" https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/mem...hreadid=315999

George installed his first proto-type design gate plate onto my stock factory shifter. Its works great and I retain the factory look with positive gear selections
