car all over the road

seems like when im driving i want to sway from side to side .,lik,. if i correct the stearing the it like i over corrected a lil to much.,it just kinda sways side to side like weight is shifting side to side.,should i just start with a front end kit then do alighenment? or perhaps some one here has had very similer probs and can tell me what needs to be done?!

dont wanna be getting pulled over c use it looks like im some kinda drunk driver.,.,

my 88 camaro had tight stearing im not sure if its in the stearing or the bushings in the front.,.,.,the only one that looks like it need a new bushing is what connects the pitman arm COULD THIS BE MY PROBLEM?

does it feel sloppy in the front end or the back? i know if i have my slicks on the back, it will sway a little because of the softer sidewalls... so, i'd double check air pressure to begin with then start lookin at "hard parts".

Car: a car being parted out
Engine: blown up
Transmission: in peices
weaving, is caused by one of the following...
Lower ball joints (common)
Tie rod ends (outter is most common) Inners do go bad too though.
Wheel bearings (not so common-but it does happen)
Steering box needs remeshed (tighened up)

Ok how to check the above...
Lift the front end, with the weight off the tires.
Place hand @ 12 and 6 o'clock on the tire. Shake up and down on that axis. If it is loose, check wheel bearings and ball joint. To further narrow it down. Place hands at 3 and 8 o'clock. Shake, if loose look at wheel bearings.

Place hand @ 9 and 3 o'clock. Shake side to side. If loose have someone either shake the tire again while you look, or have someone look at the tie rod ends to see if they are moving.

To check steering box, either you or have someone GENTLY move the steering wheel side to side. You want to compare when the steering wheel moves, as to when the wheels move. If there is no disternable delay, it is fine.

To check bushings, you need to have the car off the ground with weight on the tires. Turn the steering wheel, if you see the "A" arms deflecting at all, they are bad.

I don't think I've taken any pics of the car with the slicks on it (i'm not terribly fond of the wheels that they are on). but, you can see the different wheels on the car in a video posted on our sight...the "v6 idling with open headers" video. there's a link on the home page. you can't see the tires but you can tell that it has different wheels on the back.

adding to the list:
Center link (not a common problem)
Idler arm (mine was so worn out you could see it move 1/8" at the bearing when you shook the tire)

My car did exactly what you describe. I replaced ball joints, tie rod ends, idler arm, a-arm bushings and had alignment done. Now the steering is rock solid.

Yeah, get an alignment/front-end-checkup QUICK ... if any of those parts are so worn out that they fail, you'll be in trouble.

The idler arm and center link are wear parts on our cars... meaning, they wear out anyway over the years, no matter how much you take care of the suspension. Idler arm is $70, center link is $110. If you do them yourself, you'll need to get an alignment done QUICK.
