You can wire in a floor switch easy. I hate the switch o nthe colum, I like the old floor stompers. Just had to add two pieces of wire about 6in long. High beam part is a two wire plug.

You need to litterally take the whole colum apart to get at the guts of that switch. Maybe someone kicked the plug for it out.

lol

Say what dude i know how they work bro,,i aint some kinda [dumb ***]lol Any how thanks for the idea gumby!!!! i might just go with the floor "stomper"hehe

I did not have to remove the hole coloum.,,.i took the plastic peice from where the lever for the tilt stearing went .,,.i had to unscrew the lever and carefully pry the lil plastic houseing off i got in there and found my problem....

Turns out that there is a metal rod that goes down the shaft of the stearing colum that activate a hi low switch..

just as i thought that was not my problem.,.,My problem was that the lil plastic piece on the turn signal lever that pushes the rod up and down was broke of in there.,.,

so i have left it off for now untill i can replace it [somehow] not sure yet ,..,might be a junk yard thing idunno.,.

so as im testing the hi beam switch [manualy pushing the rod]
my damn pull out parkin and headlight switch some how got loose so when i went to push it in the box behind it mooved and they would not turn off.,.,i fixed this teporaraly useing folded and stuffed card board behind itto keep it from moving.,.,.,How the heck did it stay on any way?? perhaps if i woulda pulled the cluster out i would have seen.,.,.,

Any way i got hi beams now finally but got to switch them the getto way for now...

[ YES IM GETTO RICH]

Hmmm Didn't know you could get at it from the side.
Only time I dealt with it I was tightening my tilt steering screws.

I like the floor stomper better.
My foot is much quicker for the hi beam flash.
It's retro.

Common problem is the lose tilt colum. GM was to cheap to use locktite so the screws work them self lose. Causing all sort of strange problems in the colum. [ mine would turn off the key on a sharp turn. Key switch physically turned off.] Its one heck of a job and you need a special tilt pin puller. Gotta have it, tried without.

You might find it local, maybe. But I got mine on Ebay for like $8 + shipping.

There is no way around it. Need the pin puller.

Not totally true.
The "Speical thing puller" if for the 4 way flasher.
What ya do is go to a parts store & ya get a "Steering wheel lock "Wheel" remover.
Once the star washer used for steering lock is removed, it's simple unscrew & rescrew
BUT I WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT
Ya get a steering column rebuild kit AND WHILE AT GM PARTS COUNTER. Rebuild Kit is GM parts counter only.
Ask the guy to give ya a printout of the steering column (the exploded illustrated parts picture you'll see on parts computer screen).
The rebuild kit consists of steering column bearings & such.
It's an "OK" job to do.
The hi/low switch is right ontop of the ignition activation switch on the steering column.
Held in by two 8mm or 10mm bolts.
The steering column switch is a one piece item.
The part ya care about the MOST is getting the "tilt column knuckles" to fall into place, correctly. The rest is not bad at all.
IF ya worried about your ignition switch, have a local lock smith rebuild it. Also the column does require a "Star Screwdriver" to remove several screws.
The "Steering column Star Lock Remover" looks like a horseshoe with a bolt going thru it for releasing pressure on the star wheel lock assembly. ONe prys the holding clip with a small screwdriver. The other item (4 way flasher remover) is made by getting a larger "Nut" and a washer. Tighten the screw into the 4 way flaser assembly, onto a small washer, ontop of that bolt, remove the "hold in place item" and the turn signal switch can then be easily released/removed.
THE BEST PART OF THIS MISSION is getting the exploded diagram from the parts counter dealer.
YOU WANT TO SEE ALL YOU ARE UP against and that picture is worth it's weight in gold!
MAKE sure you buy the steering column rebuild kit, it's like $30-ish plus.
Hope this gives ya a guide.
This is a "not too hard, but a hard" job.

Think your confused, i am talking about the titl steering piviot pin puller. You can do the job without it and no store lends them out.

and is really the only special tool you need, besides some torquex drivers. Which you should have anyways. As common as a screw driver now.

Just jerk n wiggle the steering wheel will come of. Never needed a puller for it.

im thinking just going with a new searing colum but i dunno
$30-$50 for a steering column from the yards. moderate to hard job, and once done you really understand how your steering column is put together.

Hope you figured out the "long metal pole" that actuates the underdash high-beam switch.

My original had the loose screws (which fell out and got lost forever btw), and I lived with it until the wheel wouldn't turn (I was driving BTW), and forcing it popped the ignition switch into OFF at 35mph. I figured out how easy it is to steal my car that day, and managed to get her running in about 6 minutes. My wife was in shock.

Torx (star) bits are a necessity, 8-10mm nut driver, phillips head, Couple sockets. a bolt on the business end in the engine compartment (follow the steering column and you WILL see the bolt). 3 bolts in the floorboard, about 5 connectors, the high beam rod, 2 "braces" that hold it up. the hardest part is changing your lock cylinder as you'll need to figure out how to take most of the column apart, take the other one apart, and put the new one back together. The tilt steering piviot pin is a B**CH without the tool, but can be done...

When ya rebuild the tilt column, one need NOT go THAT FAR into column, to swap bearing all way back there (needing to remove that tilt pin mentioned).
On my Blazer tilt column I've had it rebuilt twice.
Only tossing suggestions out.
Thanks for tips on column removal from car. I need a tilt column for my Firebird.
