I need a little help / advice
How are you all doing? I've been off the board for awhile but it's nice to know your all still hard at it
well anyway
i'm putting my firebird back on the road this month with gas prices what they were i just left her parked for the last 8 months
so far she's pretty stock except for the headers i had made a few years back and the dynomax kit you told me about
I am saving up for a Doward turbo kitt %^)
but in the mean time i need to get this car back on the road
and it would be great if i could do it and still get more then the avg. 8mpg i've been running
i'm sending a set of stock injectore over to rich for some cleaning this week but he told me they might not be servicable so in that case i'll need to buy a new set so should i go a little larger the the stock or just stay the same
a few friends told me to get a new chip b/c the old one will not hold up to the headers & exhaust
i'm looking into a new cat and timing chain as well as a full tune up
well thats it for now i'm off to lunch
thansk again for your help & time

If your saving for dowards turbo kit, it comes with new injectors, so if your old ones are no good, go buy some junkyard ones, dont be getting new ones.
Your stock chip works on headers n catback. I have more then that and still running stock chip. Its not perfect, but neither is GM's for your stock car. Unless you can find someone local for a cheap price, again, leave this tell you get the turbo kit.
Mainly, if you get getting 8mpg, something is wrong, MAJORLY. Somethings wrong with mine right now and I'm still getting 14mpg.
Do a complete and major tune up. Search for the tomp tune up.. but its coil, wires, cap, rotor, plugs, o2 sensor, clean injectors, fuel filter, belts, hoses, all fluid flush, air filters, timing (check timing chain too). Also carefully clean your iac, and do a "decarbonization" kit (before you do everything else).
Think I'm missing a few things, but thats about it. Also, a large thing is driving it properly. Another is during the winter time they do funky things to the fuel to "help the air polution" but it actually causes less mpg and thus actually poluting more.

yea i think there is something major wrong as well
but the three shop's i've gone to have all said that everythings ok and i'm just running rich b/c of the headers
i did get ahold of a set of junk yard injectors i'm going to just send them in for a cleaning and hope that they do something

Headers will not take you from mid teens mpg, to 8mpg. If anything, they should help the mpg unless you got a heavy foot. Do a full tune up and take it elsewhere. Or surf the boards and see if anyone local has one of them livetime scanners and scan the ecm while you take it for a drive.

Id be lookin for a gas leak in your return line.
I'm not even sure your car could use so much gas and still run. Gotta be pissin it away somewhere else.

Check your rail and lines for leaks. I just found one on my rail cause I dumped 2 gallons in about 5-10 minutes and was in shock that it ran out so fast.

hmm....I've been having the same exact problem, I've been wanting to change the timing chain but have never done it and am not sure how big of a job it is. I've yet to run into something that I didn't have the tool for, sockets, wrenches and whatnot....not a lot of specialty. Been thinking of getting another set of injectors and getting them cleaned. I would think the engine would sound off if that much gas was dumping in, maybe I'm wrong. EGR and A.I.R pump don't work. High flow cat, and aftermarket exhaust, stock manifolds. Custom PVC intake, coil, wires, plugs have been changed probably 10 times, pcv valve is new, 10 - 30 oil if that matters. Just did 120miles with 3/4 of a tank with a little racing in the morning and driving normalish at night.

For a timing chain, if you have the balancer and sprocket puller, the only other thing you "might" need is a large torque bit. Some of these engines have a torque head bolt that seems to be a pain in the ***. Rest is all basic tools that you would think you need for the job.

There are 3 of them on www.partsamerica.com for the 3.1:
Part No. 119751 $83.99
Part No. 1449841 $208.99
Part No. 689751 $122.99
I was looking at the top one, mainly because of price and they only list those 3. I'm getting a 3.4 in january which will be put in as soon as weather get's better so I don't need anything great on this motor, though I would like to keep this engine running to try stuff out on it and then put it on the 3.4 l at a later date *cough* 3.3l intake *cough*.

thanks for the part #'s.
So whats this 3.3 intake look like? I'm still trying to get ideas for mine.
Edit: Nate, I knew about he cloyes, had one on the s10 3.4
I'm still kinda waiting on a gear drive replacement. Takes a hair of horse power, but makes a killer noise and no chain, strait metal to metal.
