harmonic balancer

I'm currently looking at a pretty nice 1992 rs with the 3.1. It looks to be in good shape. The seller states that it needs a new harmonic balancer, and the engine shakes but runs well. I'm worried that he may be hiding something more serious... How common is it to have a harmonic balancer go bad? Would a 2.8 balancer work? (i wouldnt think so, but doesnt hurt to ask). He is only asking a few hundred dollars, so it may be worth it...

Balancer going out is not to commen, but has been known to happen.

A 2.8 MIGHT work, depends on what year it came from(and what automobile, like s10, citation, etc).
