2.8/3.1 build up
I'm in a bit of a bind. I've got this 84 Camaro rotting in the driveway with a 2.8 5spd. It ran great till I blew it up, and I'd just as soon put a V8 in it, but since 700R4's are garbage and V8 T5's aren't exactly growing on trees I'm looking at building a 2.8.
Has anyone actually built up a 2.8 or 3.1? I don't mean simply getting a junkyard engine and dropping it in. I'm talking about having the block bored, decked, forged pistons, ARP bolts, full roller rockers, porting, etc. Anyone done it? I'd like to hear what people have done, what works and doesn't work, etc...
I figure this is a long shot since no one here seems to do anything serious, but maybe someone here has or knows where there's some more info online. Again this isn't my first choice and by no means do I recommend it over the V8, its just a workaround for lack of a V8 transmission and needing to get this car moving.

I wouldn't say 700r4's are garbage; the early 83-84 and 85-86 units had problems with strength/longevity, but later "versions" are pretty strong- even more so if you beef them up with aftermarket parts.

Yep, some of us have done some serious work or more than mild upgrades to our 2.8/3.1s.
If you were anybody else I'd provide you with the info.
I'd rather you sell your car, since I don't want to be associated with someone that has a similar engine as me, that is a **** head. "guilty by assosiation" ring a bell?

LOL Thanks for the advice... Like I said I figured it was a longshot since you guys are a bunch of delusional dreamers. Too busy chasing 3.4 swaps, turbo installs, and tune up's to actually know anything about what you're working on. To be completely honest I wouldn't be too likely to listen to most of the suggestions anyway since you guys prove, time and time again, that you have no idea what the hell you're talking about. When someone does know something in here, it is only in relation to their own cars and they dont consider that some others may be different. But then I don't get much out of posting on this particular part of this forum since there's never any really helpful information posted.
Not making suggestions to keep me from doing it sounds like a great idea, too bad I'm intelligent enough to figure it out on my own. Unlike most of the people on this particular branch of the forum I know how to obtain the proper resources, read and understand them, and put them to work for me.
Say what you will about me, but usually even if I do give someone grief I tell them what they need to know. Unless of course they're too stupid to figure out which wire is the tach lead.
I'm not interested in buying anything from anyone, I've already got all the parts lined up. But thanks anyway. Just keep all the super V6 performance secrets to yourself and get beat by the stock V8's anyway.

HAHAHAHAHAHA, I eat V8s for breakfast, lunch and dessert, with my V6.
All stock parts, well mostly, untuned, in a 3200 lbs vehicle (1985 GMC S-15 Jimmy), ran a 13.8, with a 2.07 60', and not enough fuel in 4th gear. For less than $2000 CDN investment, if it was tuned it would have gone a bottom 13 or high 12 as it was.
When I get time to work on it again, I will put the new heads and intake on be in the 12s.
But I gotta ask, if your so fvcking brilliant and have all these parts already lined up, why ask? Really, why not just do it and say "haha fvckers, I'm faster than y'all"?
All I see from you is bull ****, pure Bull ****, please go away, you have done nothing to be helpful, in fact all you seem to want to do is put people's ideas down, when you have no good information to add for your own.
It seems that you're only here to be some sort of e-thug, probably because you're someones little b!tch, and this is your only way of pretending you're something bigger than you are.
BTW, let's see if you can figure out this one:

Well I guess I could already say "haha fvckers, I'm faster than y'all"? as you put it already, since my primary choice for performance isn't a 6cyl. But then you probably don't know that since I don't live for posting about my cars online.
Think what you want, I'm really not interested in the online popularity contest or bench racing. Anyone can say anything and post pictures of anything they'd like online, and it doesn't prove anything. If you want to drive your rusted out POS Jimmy down to Sioux Falls, SD (assuming it could make the trip) then we can line em up and run em. Otherwise you're just wasting my time.
Everytime one of you tough guys has something to say you just end up making yourself look like an idiot.

LOL, that's funny.
I'm not the one trying to prove anything here, I really don't care that I can beat your F-bodies, I already know I can. I'm not going to waste my time or gas to go to you, though the scenery might make the trip worth while.
Like I said before, please go away, you do nothing but waste everyone's time.
Shoo, shoo....

Now this is entertaining. I was getting tired of reading the usual posts in this forum from some 15 year old owner of a 2.8 car dad bought him wondering if a glasspack would give him a boost in power.
