Helpful exhaust sound choice.
Helpful exhaust sound choice.
At the risk of getting banned again for helping out with helpful info to all and letting my true identity be known.....
I have finally put together my custom lightweight exhuast setup and had to play with it a bit to get the desired sound for a V6 under higher revs.
I first installed the custom 28.5" long baffled stainlessworks muffler in place of the I-pipe and then hacked off the entire rear Flowmaster setup I had.
I ran this directly out and it was quieter (but still deep)than the flowmaster at idle but was obnoxious as heck over 4000 rpms. I then played with three different mufflers (2 Dynomax's, and a Supertrapp- neither of the three in any combo worked with the Stainlessworks) in line with the Stainless works trying to reduce resonating and volume.
Low and behold, the best thing to my surprise was the addition of a 2 1/2" inlet/outlet Cherrybomb 10"long muffler(4"x7" oval) with a little resonator tip from Pepboys in sequence with the Stainlessworks 28.5" I-pipe muffler still in place. The sound is sooooo appropriate at both idle AND under 6000rpms it is in my opinion the perfect combo. It has also lightened up the heavy exhaust routing behind the rear wheels making the route to the tailpipe exit slightly shorter and reducing rear polar weight for handling.
Trust me on this setup. Its quite but deep, not the least bit obnoxious but yet you can tell the car is not stock at idle or under extreme rpms without sounding like all noise and no go.
Exhausts on these V6's tend to sound either stock at idle and throaty at speed-or- deep V8 at idle and loud and raspy embarassing at speed when you open the TB. This final setup is the best of all worlds.
Also note: This car does have headers so it affects overall the exhaust tone.

I have been nothing but helpful in the past year yet we still play this game of cat and mouse.
