Different driveability

I was wondering why my car feels differnt when I drive it in overdrive and the regular gear? I think overdrive is the gear with the square. I drive in overdrive on the FWY and the car feels so much different. In regular gear, when I drive and let off of the accelerator it feels like it's pulling back when Im at a higher rate of speed. The car actually drives good in both, but I can feel the difference. Is this normal and what gear should I drive the car in? Also, What are the gears marked 1 and 2 for?

1 keeps it in 1st (but if u leave it there and try to go above its max. speed itll shift into 2nd on its own), 2 keeps it in 2nd, D keeps it in 3rd and under so u have better power since you're at higher rpms. D with a square is overdrive for better mileage but its not as powerful as leaving it in D.

In manual overdrive the overrun clutches are disabled (or off, disengaged). With that there is no engine braking through the transmission. In manual 1, 2, 3 the overrun clutches are engaged allowing for some engine braking.

The 'manual' part of the above refers to where the gear selecter is placed. If in overdrive and the transmission is in 3rd, the overrun clutches are still disabled.

Yup, Rbob speaks the truth. OD gives your 1,2,3,4 with TCC lockup and no engine braking. D gives you 1,2,3 with TCC lockup and engine braking, 2 gives you 1,2 with no lockup and engine braking, and 1 gives you 1. The tranny will still shift to 2 in 1 at about 37MPH. You REALLY gotta pound it in 1 to activate this safety feature.
