Flex plate removal....
I was wondering whats the easiest way to get the flex plate (or whatever it's called) off the back of my engine block. I need to get it balanced. Seperate block from the tranny and lift block up a little or seperate block from tranny and shift tranny back a bit?

You would be advised just to pull the trans out as you'll have to get all the way up to the bolts that mount it to the crank.
While you're in there, don't forget to replace the rear main seal.

Whats the diff between flexplate and flywheel? I need to get mine balanced because my car vibrates like a son of a you know what when idling. This happened when I replaced my 87 firebird motor (automatic) with one from a 89 5 spd camaro. (The camaro motor didn't come with the big circular disk on the back of it so I reused mine and now the car shakes, rattles, and rolls.) I was told they were balanced differently between those yearrs.

Flexplate = Automatic Trans
Flywheel = Manual Trans
The Flywheel has the mating surface for the clutch where as the flexplate is thinner and bolts to the engine and Torque Converter.
If it started when you swapped the motors, it's very likely the the flexplate does need to be balanced because of the new motor's internal balance. Also make sure that your harmonic balancer hasn't slipped.

omg
lmao
ok well 86 and up are same balance, you wouldnt evne be able to bolt an 85 and older one to an 86 and later crank for beginners
anyways uhmm
an auto plate is called the flexplate and is think steel stamped and big holes in it.. not the heavy big iron one for clutches
lol...
what tranny is in the car you are working on and what plate do you have on it ???
this is very intriguing lol
good luck

well it is my expiriance that the torq converter is bolted to the flex plate,.then the flex plate is bolted on to the back of the block,. now getting the plate of is not complicated as long as you can keep the block from turning while your yanking the bolts loose,..,,.the most comlicated part of this project of yours is basicaly pulling the trans back this means supporting the block with one jack and supporting the trans with another as you ease it down and back,.theres not to musch involved if you got patiants,.,. with lil things like ujoints drive line,. fluied.,,. oh yea just be prepared for some reason my 88 stick, had a tough time breaking loose the top right bell housing bolt,.,.{thats the left side if standing in front of motor} sucker seemed like it was welded on there,..,any way only lil prob i realy had trouble with was that i accedently put the flex plate on backwards but boss caught it befor i put the new clutch in.,
oh yea like 2 point 8 boy said make sure you put in another rear main seal you dont wanna do this after youve already pulled the trans,..,,.

Just a thought, but I remember someone saying that an off balance/wrong flywheel/flexplate can damge the crankshaft or something liek that even if used for a short period of time. Does he have to check for other damage?
