3.4 swap questions
I was wondering if its really necessary to change the timing cover when doing the swap. If I stand corrected the only reason to do so is for the timing marks correct. The mechanic I have going to do the swap says its not really necessary to do so. Just change out the top end and alls good. Wondering if he was correct and if so will just doing the oil pan adn top haev do all I need?
Thanks,
Derick

when I did my swap, I bolted teh timing tetth to teh 3.4 as close to the 2.8 as I could. I also kept the 3.4 oil pan, which, iirc, has a slightly diff front bolt set up than the 2.8's (which would be why if you keep the 2.8 oil pan, reuse the 2.8 front cover.

You are a life saver, that is exactly what I wanted to hear.. I have been looking at that all day and I figured the oilpan would work. Thanks a million for the input that makes my job a whole lot easier. So just do the top and be done with it. Also did you do your exahust manifolds 2?
Also did you keep the 3.4 flywheel? If I can run with that all I have to do is swap the tranny, morot mounts, and the oil filter housing and its a go. I can be up and running this week.

That would be your EGR tube. I got mine blocked off, but then again, I have no emissions stuff on my engine.

when i put my 3.4 in, i used the 2.8 cover w/ the 3.4 pan and had no issues. but i have heard from some that it doesnt work, it may depend on what year your 2.8 is.

Cool thanks for all the input. I'm gonna go with the 3.4 setup and set the timing by ear. My dad is pretty good at that even with the timing marks. Most of the time he doesn't even use the marks. Being that the engine was running good with no leaks b4 I bought it, I would rather leave well enough alone.
The weather isn't cooperating today so I will put it off till tomorrow. This always happens when you have something you're really ready to do.

Finally done and looking good. Sad to say that the 2.8 had a blocked oil passage that I cleared up once I got it out and its good to go now but I like the 3.4 in there. The guy that I brought it from did a lil work to it(3.4) and it pulls really strong. Too bad the weather is changing I would drive it on the regular. Still might do so but people here in VA cannot drive when the weather gets bad and I would kill if my car gets hit. So its being parked for the winter and gutting the inside for a fresh look in the spring.
Anyway thanks to everyone that gave me insite on the swap. Basically did a pull and drop over the weekend just forgot to update you all. I'll post some pics when I can.
P.S. Anyone want a rebuilt 2.8 minus a few parts????????????????????
