ticking and loss of power then runs fine again

hey guys, i have a 91 3.1 and when ill drive it on the highway for a long period of time, it will lose power, like its runing on 4 or 5 cyls.. i pulled over, and something was ticking under the hood, but i couldnt pinpoint it. but after i get off the highway and go into stop and go driving, the ticking wil go away after about 5 minutes and all power wil be restored. what the heck could cause this??? its happened to me 3 times already. and only happens at driving at steady speeds on the highway for more than 10 miles. i deliver pizzas in the car all week in stop and go and have no problem, what could cause this??
thanks, cliff

Not sure, but those are the conditions that the EGR is activated under. Maybe a leaky, sticking EGR valve? Does it throw a code?

i havent checked it yet to see if it throws a code, the engine soon light isnt on, though... a friend told me it may be one of the coil packs getting hot from the steady driving. i could see this cause it does seem like the car is runing on 2 less cylinders. but i will go get the codes scanned tomorrow

The 3.1 only has one coil, and a distributor.
