Nothing else ever goes wrong to make this happen, huh?

It's not that simple. I'm not saying it isn't the cat, but there are a lot of other things to check before you just say that's definitly what it is.

We need more info. How does the car idle, Rough or smooth? Are the manifolds glowing in the dark? Is it all the time that you have this lack of power or just when it's hot/cold? Have you done anything to it recently? Tune-up, washed the engine, anything like that???

Here's how to tell if it's a cat problem: hook up a vacuum guage to the manifold tee on the back of the plennum. Use the small one on the passenger side. Just pull the hoses that are there off and let them hang, nothing major being d/c. Now hook up the vacuum guage.

You should see about 16-18" of vacuum at idle. Hold the throttle up to about 2000 RPM and the vacuum should go up to about 20-22". Now snap the throttle all the way open and let it slam back closed.

You should have seen the vacuum guage go all the way to 0 when you snapped it open, then when it closed, it should have spiked all the way up to about 28 or so. It should spike really high. If it doesn't, then you have an exhaust backpressure problem. Then suspect the CAT.
