newb question about 3.1 - 2.8 intake swap

okay, so I got a complete 3.1 from hawks, i dont want to change my ECU/ECM to use it (I've got an 85 bird orginaly a 2.8) the 2.8 and its intake are long gone.. so do I need the entire 3 peice 2.8 intake to swap?

the 2.8/3.1 intakes are the same minus the cold start injector, and the 3.1 upper does not say 2.8 on it,u can delete the cold start injector without problems,
the tb on the 3.1 is slightly diff,u need to change the plugs on ur harness for the tps sensor

Or if you want to make it easy, just use a carberator intake...

I want to stay fule injected.

So basicly, I just have to leave the cold start injector un hooked, and use the 2.8 TB? or what plugs do I need to get? I'm preaty sure I still have the 2.8TB

just use the motor as is,goto a junkyard and cut the iac motor plug and tps plugs off the 3.1 harness,u then cut off the plugs on ur car and splice in the 3.1 style plugs onto the 2.8 harness

oh. hawks sent the engine with all wiring and accessorys, would those already be on there then ^_^

dont kill me, normaly I can figure this stuff out but i've never messed with this stuff before.

**EDIT**
So let me see if I understand this, I dont have to switch ECU/ECMs to use this engine? I have an 85 bird MAF this engine came from a MAP car... I thought I'd have to change ECUs? or at least reuse the 2.8 intake..

Nope you don't have to switch anything, because you'll be using your car's wiring harness and computer. If you tried to use the harness that came with the 3.1, then yes, you'd need to get a 3.1 computer, MAP, etc.

Dave's saying to change the connectors for the TPS and IAC because they're different styles 3.1-vs-2.8.

You can definately do the job like you said (putting your 2.8 intake on the 3.1), and its not that hard of a job, actually. Just grab the 82-92 Haynes manual and remember three things:
1. Be careful when scraping the old gaskets off; don't gouge the aluminum with the scraper.
2. Don't take off pushrods, but if you do (for whatever reason), make sure they go back in the SAME HOLES that they came from.
3. Use a torque wrench when tightening the bolts for the intake/plenum/TB/etc- those are steel bolts going into aluminum and you dont' want to either strip the aluminum OR crack the bolt holes. Torque wrench is $80 from Sears.

Or you can leave the 3.1 intake on, and plug your 2.8 harness into the 3.1. Like Dave said, you'll have nowhere to plug the cold start injector wire (but thats OK), and the TPS/IAC plugs will need to get changed.

Actually, ya know what, you could put your 2.8 throttle body on the 3.1 upper plenum. Then you don't have to worry about the TPS/IAC plugs!

AWSOME!! that is just freakin awsome. I was actually going to ro slightly rebuild it first though, I want to a MTC-5 cam in it, and 1.6 ratio rockers. Nothin major just a little extra nudge. (at least till I can afford a turbo.. I think i'm eventually going to go with a RMT setup ^_^)

I cant use my 2.8 intake, it got messed up... lets just say when i started this all a coupel years ago, the 2.8 was getting replaced with a 355 so care was not taken... I should however still have my TB laying around from that bugger ^_^
