V8 Upgrade
Just bought a 92 Firebird with a V6. I have a 350 V8 with a T350 Trans, sitting in a 1979 Chevrolet truck. The motor I am told was originaly in a 197? Trans Am. How big a job would it be to get this V8 into my firebird? If the V8 runs properly will I still be able to pass emmissions tests in Texas. I would imaging that when they connect the computer it would throw errors, and fail since most of the newer electronics would not be present on this older motor. Is there a way around this, or do I need to look into turbo chargers for the V6?

Most smog laws say that the engine has to be the same year or newer than the car...
You're not going to pass emissions with 70-something's emission controls...
You should look for a 92 Firebird or Camaro V8 that is complete to do your swap and stay smog legal. Look for a wrecked car to save money...

good questions with simple ancers. Most of them are ancered because most of them are asked alot. Lookin in the sticky forms They spell out how to do everything you asked (I like simple things and riging up fuel injection and trubos is Complicated). The question you need to ask yourself after you read them is what do I want to do with the car and what can I do myself. Myself I would go with a V8 with a carb set up becase I live in a place where There is no smog checking. I am leaving my car as is for now becase it' my primary transporation and My V6 does fine.
One more thing, Your V6 makes 140 HP from the factory (It's old and probaly didn't make the advertised power back in the day). Asuming that the truck motor is stock it could of made lets say 140-200 if it's 350 and if it's a 305 it could be 130-160 (factory numbers excluding the Camaro motors) from the factory. IF the origanal motor is in your truck it will be easy just look it up in a chiltens or something. If it's not origanal and being the age of the truck there is a good posabilty you ill have to look for the casting numbers to get your power rating. Also make sure the vacume, compresion and leak down are good before you start pulling things apart. The last thing you want to do is swap out a v6 for a V8 that makes less power.

To answer the original questions.
Yes it's possible to swap over the drivetrain, however, the tranny will need some work to be able to use the torque arm set-up that is stock in the 3rd gen F-bodies, and there are a lot of other parts that need to be swapped over, like rad, engine mounts, exhaust, etc. The engine in the truck will be carburated (Unless there was a previous conversion done), and therefore won't need an ACM, but due to the year of the recipient I would get the V8 EFI parts and use that, much nicer to drive, works better and cleaner.
That being said, just by you asking this question, I would have to assume that you are not capable of performing this swap, so you will need to pay someone to do it for you and therefore the money you would spend on this swap could easily be saved by buying a V8 car.
Personally I prefer V6s with turbos, well I just plainly prefer turbos.
