engine swap problem?
I have an 86 firebird with the 2.8 and I am going to be looking into a new motor here in the next two weeks or so and was wondering if a newer motor with the serpentine belt will fit in my car? All the motors I can find anywhere close to home have the serpentine belt setup.

Re: engine swap problem?
Many of the newer V6 engines in our cars have them. My 88 2.8 has one and my 90 3.1 had a serpentine as well. The 88 and 89 2.8 V6 engines are a direct swap into your car and use the serpentine setup. The 90 - 92 3.1 engines will swap in easily if you use your accessories and wiring on that engine. The same is true for the 3.4 V6 from 93-95 Camaros and Firebirds. If you swap to serpentine setup make sure that your wiring and emission devices are still hooked up so that your computer can respond.
If you are gonna swap a V8 in then all bets are off!!

Re: engine swap problem?
So your sayin as long as it is a 2.8 from 86-89 it will drop rite in with no mods whatsoever using the new engines serpentine setup if it comes with it? Or do you mean I will have to swap my pulleys/etc onto that new engine?

Re: engine swap problem?
Before 1990 all of those engines run a mass air flow system and I believe that EVERYTHING should just swap right on. You could also just take all of the serpentine setup from the pre-90 engines and put them on yours to accomplish the same thing.
The newer engines also use a serpentine setup but some of the parts go in different places. They are speed density fuel injection and use different EGR, air pump setups (or no pump), intake setup, exhaust manifold etc...
It really is easy if you take your time. Also, what's wrong with V-belts?

Re: engine swap problem?
Nuthin that I know of. Its just my motor is fried and it seems that the only motors in the junkyards are serpentine belts. I just didnt know if I had to find a vbelt motor or if a serp engine would fit.
