got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

for those of you that dont know what ive done to my car:

Engine:
Intake mild port/polish job
heads full port/polish job done by Dave

1.6 ratio roller rockers
comp cams high energy push rods
delta custom grind cam/lifters
Specs:
Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift: 212
Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift: 212
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 212 int./212 exh.
Advertised Intake Duration: 260
Advertised Exhaust Duration: 260
Advertised Duration: 260 int./260 exh.
Lobe Separation (degrees): 114

Fuel Supply:
19lbs 07 Mustang GT fuel injectors
Walboro 255L fuel pump

Exhaust:
Pacesetter headers
Custom 2 1/4 inch true duals
Dual Dynomax bullets
(soon getting custom made full length headers)

Nitrous:
Cold Fusion 100-200 wet nitrous shot.
single nozzle
with dual purge outlet
(soon to be direct port fogger system)

Next on the agenda is
Suspension/Drivetrain:
Posi rear
4.10 gears
line locks
sub frame conectors
70/30 drag struts

Transmission:
Rebuild the stock 700R4
Shift Kit
Stall Convertor??? any ideas!!!???

dam its been long enough finally, the problem i was having was the valve lash wasnt set right. i poped the valve covers to find that 3 out of 6 cylinders exhaust valves where not even opening, but after a quick adjustment, the thing tunred over. all it has for exhaust right now is headers and let me tell you this is probally the loudest street car ive ever heard. it straight up sounds like a pro stock car. anyways i have a pretty big issue to deal with now ive got some(alot i think) water in my oil, i belive its from my intake gasket so im gonna tear it back down to investigate. hopefully by the weekend ill be out racing.

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

WTF!!! i just pulled off the intake all the way to the block and for some reason one of the intake studs was snapped, and the end of the bolt is sitting in the headm while the head was sitting on top of the intake. how did this snape with out me knowing about it??? and when i pulled the lowest intake off i was expexting to find the gasket folded over or pinched or ripped or something and letting the water and oil mix, but nothing. where is it mixing together???

You might have to check the head gaskets =(. Are you sure there was no breech in the gasket? Did you use RTV and where?

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

yeah im almost 100% sure it isnt the head gasket, becuase i had it all together for a couple days and it wasnt mixing oil and water then i had to take the intake all the way off again and then it started to mix oil and water. is there a way to check the head gasket with out removing it?

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

if the motor is still together u could have used a cooling system presure tester.
more then likley ur manifold was leaking coolant into the lifter valley.specially with a broken bolt
----------
oh btw in responce to ur pm no i dont have any manifold bolts laying around

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

Did you do anything custom to the heads? IE, you didn't deck them to change the CR did you?

The coolant only flows through the front of the manifold. The back is just a blockoff. If you want to be safe, i used spray glue to stick the gasket perfectly to the head (plus i gasket matched the ports) and then put the intake on to make sure the gasket wouldn't walk around.

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

the heads arent decked, but they are full ported, but i presure checked them before i shiped them back.there is still water at the back of the heads, even though the waterpassage is blocked off at the manifold.so if it was losse it would still leak

I just made that comment for the sake of doing it.

Maybe it was just the bolt or you blew water into it by accident?

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

im having a bitch of a time removing that bolt though, its about a 1/4 sticking out of the block so i tried some vice grips really really tight and it just almost squished the bolt so then i tried reverse bolt grips, but they just cut the thread up, i really dont want to try and drill it, but i guess thats what im left at now.

Don't booger up the bolt anymore. If you feel comfortable welding (or have your uncle do it) use a nut slightly smaller than the diameter of the bolt and weld the inside of the nut to the bolt, remove.

Have you tried heat?

If you can find it, PBblaster is far superior to wd40.

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

well i went to the auto store and bought a diffrent broken bolt remover that kind that you hammer on to the broke end and just use a socke t and twist it off, well it snapped the bolt flush with the head, so then i went and bought an easy out and drilled a hole and tried to hammer the little bit in the hole and twist it out, but i am having no luck.

btw i test drove a 87 vette today, so if i get frustrated enough with this, im buy the vette and sell the camaro and keeping my nitrous stuff.

Try to keep the heat on the head, but don't let it get too red.

Should have tried heat when you had something to grab, .

What kind of extractor do you have? Is it he sqare thing you drive into a hole drilled in the center of the bolt?

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

no i can get a square thing, but im using a revere thread drill bit thing, so when i turn the drill bit to remove the bolt the bit digs into the bolt and grips it, so far it hasnt worked.
----------
btw is this bolt go into the block? or does it just stop in the head?

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

alright im now at the point of "what the hell did i do?" i got the heads back with the bolt drilled out, put a new head gasket down, all new intake gasket, and the whole engine together, go to fill it up with oil and water and i hear some minor dripping right away. it was leaking water from what i thought was the drivers side head gasket, when i only pu in one gallon of water. no oil leaks. and oil and water arent mixing anymore. but its leaking water terrible. the heads where torqued right, gakset was new, and put on right. i think the water is leaking from right below the 6 cylinder un the header. is it possible the haed gasket is blown already, it was leaking before i even started it. or is there a freeze plug or sumtihn i might have broke over there that would cause the water to leak.??

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

well i just pulled the header and put water back in it, i think its coming from the gasket sadly.

it just seems like its leaking way to fast to be a head gasket, and i only put in 1 gallon of water in the radiator, and it started to leak almost instantly.

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

dude, you must have a serious hole somewhere! I would really go over the engine and check all of the freeze plugs and threaded inserts.

Theres no way it could be the head gasket. Unless your heads or block are SEVERELY warped. Are you torqueing them in the right order? New head gaskets? Any cracks? If its leaking that bad it HAS to be obvious.

haha im at a loss now, i went out after work today and filled the car back up with water. no leaks... so im like wtf is going on now. i think waht happend was the block drain was a little lose and water was actually squirt out, possibly upwards and making me think a head gasket, but i went through the other day and was tightening things up a bit adn is this possible. like why isnt it leaking now, and i dont see any smoke coming out of the headers. so is the gasket not really bad?

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

well i went out with my dad and tried for like a half hour to get it to start but it was a no go. we messed with the timming a bit, but nothing. glad to say though not a drop of water anyway, a little tiny oil leak due to the dizzy hold down clamp want tight and poped out. but not leaking water. we cant get it started though, its got good spark and fuel and air. but the timming is so off wack it wont catch, only for a few seconds then it dies out. but i would much rather have this problem then a bad head gasket.

Check to make sure that your timing off the right mark on the balancer. I found out the hard way that there are three marks

That was exactly the reason why my engine wouldn't start.

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

hook up the timming light and have somone crank the car, make sure the est is unhooked, this will alow u to see how far out the timing is.and u can adjust from there. just be forewarned even if the timing is 180 out the mark on the balancer will still show up when the timing light flashes

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

well i went to the zone after work today and picked up some new plugs and a $50 battery charger cause i cant find mine!!! anyways im gonna get up early tommorw and mess with it before i go to work. its seems to run on starting fluid but not gas, so my first thought was that it might be out of gas, but its not. and i have a fuel gauge hooked upto the fuel rail and its got about 45psi. also put a new oil pressure gauge and im getting about 40-45psi also.

Re: got the 2.8 nitrous fed drag car running!!!!

well i got it running today, its idle is insane though. it just instantly went to like 5,000rpm and then back to 1,500 for no reason, i might have hit the pedal, but i dont think i did. and also its insanley loud, louder than before. my ears have been ringing for hours, because i was under the hood messing with the timming when it first fired up. it wont stay running though, it ran for a total of 30 seconds but with a terrible idle. i know its gonna idle choppy because of the cam, but it cant be this bad.
