Engine teardown

Hey guys im replacing a lot of parts; distrubutor, fuel rail, injectors, coil, and valve cover gaskets on my 3.1 engine. I have the valve covers off and the passenger side was a pain in the *** to get off, so i got to thinking, is there anything i should check while I'm at this point? I don't want to tear everything down all over again. I did notice a ticking noise when accelerating which i thought would be from the valve train but everything looks fine. My chilton manual says that lash is not adjustable because the lifters are hydraulic. I was thinking of maybe changing valve seals but i don't have a valve spring compressor. Any idea what else i should check or replace while I'm at this point???

*Also is it normal for rocker arms to wiggle? The pushrods are ok, there is no up and down play at all but the rocker arms are wobbly.

Re: Engine teardown

Yes it is OK that the rockers wiggle, and I don't know where Chilton gets off saying the rockers aren't adjustable because they are. I have posted a few times before on the procedure.

Why was the pass side so hard to get off? Did you take off the coil bracket?

While you are in this deep, replacing the intake gaskets would be a good idea since the 60* v6 has a tendency of them leaking.

Here's a link for the adjustments (post #5)...

Re: Engine teardown

The manual does say you can adjust it but that it isn't necessary unless you are replacing components. Ya i took off the coil bracket, EGR, alternator, and i had to bend an engine hook back. I can use RTV silicone for an intake gasket right? Thanks for the link.

I wouldn't use RTV, but then again I go into the motor a lot. I got some FelPro gaskets and used some spray adhesive to get then to stick on the removable part. Then put a light coat of oil on the bottom, so the manifolds can be removed without having to buy new gaskets.

The top-end gasket kit is like $30 IIRC fron FelPro.

Re: Engine teardown

im in mine a lot too, so i just usually use the cork gaskets and put 3 or 4 dabs of black RTV on to hold it in place while i put it on. the cork ones are cheap and if youre in there a lot, not too hard to take back off. if you wait a long time, you might wanna shoot yourself, lol.
