3.4 swap distributor mounting question
3.4 swap distributor mounting question
Hi,
i`m just overhauling an 3.4 engine on an engine stand. Soon I'll be able to put the 3.4 in my 92 3.1 Firebird.
But I have a question about the distributor mounting.
I removed the bolt and the hold-down-clamp. Now I could turn around the "silver" block (see picture). I also removed the plug.

Do I have to remove the whole "silver" block to put my 3.1-Distributor in?
The block sticks to the engine block and moves only about 1 mm up.
Greetings from Germany!

Re: 3.4 swap distributor mounting question
That "block" should mimic the bottom half of the 3.1 dizzy correct? If it does then it should have two big o-rings to seal the upper lifter galley. It will take some umph to get it out. You might be able to pop it out if you flip the engine over, remove the oil pump, and tap on the oil pump shaft? I've never had a 3.4 block so I'm only speculating.

Re: 3.4 swap distributor mounting question
You will see when you pull your 3.1 distributor out that you have to remove more from your 3.4 engine to get your old distributor back in!
Your old distributor will go down in the hole after you remove what is left of the 3.4 distributor or cam sensor or whatever you have in the hole right now. Your distributor will have a small gear on the end that must mesh with the camshaft gear and slip into the oil pump drive. It will all make sense once you pull out the rest of your broken 3.4 part.

Thanks for your fast answers.
I only wanted to know if I have to pull the "bottom distributor half" out of the 3.4 engine to put my dizzy in. Tommorow I'll try to remove it with pliers or something, because although you can turn it, it`s still stuck to the engine-block. On the photo you can see something like a shaft and a washer when you remove the plug. It's like the dizzy-shaft without a distributor

it's a distibutor hole plug. If it moves a little up just use a screwdriver to pry it up to push the screwdriver in, and just turn. it should just pop out!

Re: 3.4 swap distributor mounting question
That would be the oil pump drive that is used on the 3.4 and all FWD aluminium headed 660s.
Use a flat head screwdriver or chisle to get it to lift a bit and then pry it out with a large screwdriver or pry bar. The o-ring gets hard and causes the oil pump drive to get stuck in the block, this happens with all 660s it semms, the dizzys just have mor area to grab and pull on.

I pulled it out by twisting with a screwdriver.
With the twisting motion of the screwdriver, it came out well....
Now I can go on with overhauling the engine
