Motor Build Advice
Motor Build Advice
I'm getting a 2.8 I would like to build up and I am new to this particular engine so any help would be great. As far as horsepower goes I am looking for 250 to 300 reliably (well, semi reliably anyway
). I am figuring on going forced induction in order to achieve my Hp goal, also individual TB's, Megasquirt, H20 injection, port and polish heads, and exhaust work. A few questions are concerning how much PSI I would need, what kind of Hp the stock internals can take, where I can get forged rods and/or a crank, also a copper head gasket and what cam choices I have to match my setup. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Re: Motor Build Advice
You would have to go FI for 300 HP. You could get up to 200 NA with the right parts. All of the internals are forged exccept for the pistons.
Re: Motor Build Advice
Only the rods are forged from the factory, a 3500 crank is steel and can be offset ground to fit.
Many people have gotten 300hp reliably with the stock crank. The top ring land on the pistons are the weak link. If you are going to stay 2.8 and not stroke it to 3.1, then you can get forged pistons from the Fiero store (they are actually modified from a Ford Cosworth).

30hp more IIRC, and you gain about 7% more power per psig of boost.
3.1 has 140hp, so 7% of 140 is 9.8. This means for every pound of boost you can figure on gaining at least that, so 6psi should give you at least 200.
At 14.7psi, your power should be double the power, as you are doubling the atmosphere, and will require double the fuel.
