Big Problem Need car for work tommorow! Please Help!

Ok, I was sitting in traffic, it was 95 degrees F. The car was running roughly 100 Celcius, with 280 KPA of oil pressure. But all of a sudden, my oil pressure started dancing, and it started to run like crap. I mean, it has decent power until about 1400 RPM, then it just starts chugging, and popping like mad. I finally got to work, and left it there while I went and did my thing. But on the way home, it was worse, and progressed as I went.
It sounded like a stock car, so I was thinking that my exhaust could have finally broken off, and my O2 was all messed up, but when I finally did get home, I could smell the undercoating burning off the floor of the car, and my exhaust, pipe, cat, and everything were red hot. My dad told me it could be a stuck injector, but what else could it be? Intel is needed! Thanks much, KP.

Sounds to me like your cat might be clogged, I would check that first.

if it smelled like rotten eggs but sometimes it doesn't smell like that U could also tap it and hear for lose pieces. Another thing to check is if a vacuum line came undone it will make u run rich.

Re: Big Problem Need car for work tommorow! Please Help!

I've heard about the cat problem, but that would've happened over time. This seems more like a ignition/fuel problem then anything. You can acually hear it blowing into the exhaust manifold. It's a very distinguished sound. But I'll have my cousin look at it tommorow, he knows 60* V6's better than I would, I just know big block Fords...

Hey Rover, you wouldn't by anychance know anyone with a 3.4 for sale, would ya?

Re: Big Problem Need car for work tommorow! Please Help!

Yea but 12 people have told me what a cat sounds like when it gets gummied up, and it's exactly what happened, a total loss of power, and it doesn't want to go anymore. I already bought the new cat, it was only 100$ anyway.. But if this doesn't do anything, It's probably a motor problem.. We'll see...

Well turns out that the cat is not the problem.. Cut it off, fired it up, and still, the exact same problem... I'm very lost...

If you ran it with just an open y-pipe then you may not have very much back pressure. If you loose alot of back pressure then you loose alot of torque. Put the new cat on and see what happens.

Re: Big Problem Need car for work tommorow! Please Help!

Well, the cat acually had nothing left, the honeycomb stuff was completely blown apart. It could've been one of the problems, but it seems more like a fuel problem because passed 2100 RPM it completely dies... I'm checking compression tommorow.

Have you snapped a fuel pressure gauge on it and then revved it up to see the pressure at that specific rpm??

Re: Big Problem Need car for work tommorow! Please Help!

fuel pressure is where it's at...

That's why your oil pressure started dancing. You were running out of gas...

Just had this happen to a friend's TBI 350. Word to the wise; buy the replacement fuel pump for the 89 Turbo T/A. It's available at the auto parts store for 10 bucks more than the V6 pump standard on our cars. They keep it in stock because it is also the pump used on the first Vortech pickup truck engines...

Re: Big Problem Need car for work tommorow! Please Help!

I got a reply on 60* V6.com about a oil sending unit causing it aswell. I'd much rather check that first, than ripping apart the tank to get to the sending unit. I got a pic of the plugs, and I did a compression test. My results were EDIT : I forgot to mention I changed the plugs 1000 km ago.

Re: Big Problem Need car for work tommorow! Please Help!

You don't have to rip into the tank to check fuel pressure...

You just need a fuel pressure gauge (about 35 dollars) from the auto parts store and plug it in at the back of your fuel rail. You should have over 40 psi most of the time. It's very easy to do...

My suggestion about the fuel pump to use when replacing your old one was just for general knowledge. If you condemn your pump you are better off to replace it with that one than your exact replacement.

Haha!! It's the Mass Airflow sensor. I pulled off the hose going to the throttle body, and fired it up, 3800 RPM and no problems! I'm so happy it's not the fuel pump. Thanks guys! KP.

More like time to rip out the motor, trans, and rear end and putting in a carb'd 350, 5 speed trans, and 10 Bolt POSI. Mom is really starting to **** me off, aswell.

76 dollars for a new one on partsamerica.com. That's advance auto parts and Kragen locally.

Lifetime warranty.

Hope this helps!

I would say replace the MAF and see if that fixes it. The problem with it might not have been the contacts.

Yea, but if I have it plugged in, it runs the same with no check engine light, but yet, unplugged, the check engine light is running strong, and the car runs the exact same, with less black smoke.

Here's a doozey for you! We were getting 18-25-35-40 Psi and it kept going in between those numbers. A few vacuum hoses were off and stuff, and I need new plugs. The guy I brought it to was starting to take off the crossmembers and heat sheilds when he noticed the praline hose leading to the tank was twisted 3 times around. He undid it, and put it back on straight.
The car runs like a top, better than when I bought it!
