Torque Arm Removal

Ok guys I'm stuck, I'm slowly but surely getting the engine out of my car. I got most of the cooling system out, got the exhausts off, drained all the tranny & engine oil (going to replace it anyway) & removed the driveshaft. The problem I'm having now is, in the process to lower the transmission to get to the bellhousing bolts I need to remove the torque arm. The book (Haynes) says to place a block of wood between the t/a and the floorpan to stop the t/a from contacting it. I've done this and romoved the plate that holds one side of the t/a and loosened the rear 2 bolts as per the book, but the arm wont move out of it's bracket. Any ideas guy's??? (The cars on axle stands at the front and on it's wheels at the back, don't know if that makes a difference?)

Speed.

Re: Torque Arm Removal

I had the same problem that you are having. What you need to do is drop the tanny like 6-8" as I had to do and take the bolts out of the bushing. The bushing has a pivot point on it, forgot if it swings up or down. The whole bracket and bushing bolts run through the whole tailshaft of the tranny so you just can't slip it off without lowering the tranny. Hope that helps, thats all I can remember from doing it.

Re: Torque Arm Removal

To remove a T/A from the car just remove the 2 rear mounting bolts and pull the T/A out of the tranny mount. It's that easy.

I usually put the bolts back in the T/A so I have something to grasp in order to pull the T/A out ofthe tranny mount. It just slides right out. I never even touch the T/A mount on the tranny when pulling a motor/tranny; just pull the T/A out of the mount and leave the mount installed on the tranny.

When you are ready to reinstall everything, reassemble the T/A mount and snug the top bolt with your fingers.... The BODY will need to be jacked up IN THE REAR so the (long) bolts have room to be installed. (Leave the tires on the ground - but raise the body as high as possible before the tires are lifted. ) Then slide the T/A into the mount and install the 2 bolts in the rear end. Tighten the T/A mount bolt and move on to the next step. You might need a floor jack under the rear end to get the angle right so the T/A lines up with the holes and so the bolts slide in easy. Just a pump or so at the pumpkin should be enough to pitch the rear end correctly.

Since the T/A mounting bolts are loose already all you need to do is jack up the back of the body and pull the bolts out - then pull the TA from it's mount. Done !

Re: Torque Arm Removal

Thanks John & 2.8RS,

Was gonna ask why can't I just take the thing off but didn't want to sound EVEN MORE dum! I was thinking that if I took off the wrong bolt off the thing would just spring out and destroy the car or me or both!
Anyway, can progress from there again when I get chance this week, Thanks guy's

Speed.
