Fuel pressure regulator

Ok, I always wondered about my fuel pressure regulator, and I just read up on it on the boards. I pulled off the vacuum hose and I smell some gas in there, and from what i read, thats a bad thing. I have a bit of hesitation on accelration (always had it) and was thinking this might be able to solve it. Regardless, I'd like to change it if its bad.

So I was thinking of changing it but had a few concerns.

1. It is said that the whole fuel rail has to be changed, but people say otherwise. From what i read, most of these replacement parts people get are just the cap and use the old regulator stuff....I wanna replace the whole thing. Is there a complete stock (just a direct replacement) regulator available? If so, any suggestions? AC Delco? Napa? etc... Or is it just available with a new fuel rail?

2. I also have the huge, gigantic, scary, monstrous 3.4 in there Soooo would it be better to get a fuel pressure regulator for the original 2.8 or for a3.4?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Fuel pressure regulator

You can just replace the diaphragm and that will stop your gas smell. Your regulator is built in to the fuel rail but there are no parts to wear out in the rail so why replace it? There's just a hole there for the diaphragm and top hat to sit on. Buy a stock replacement from the auto parts store or buy an adjustable unit for a TPI V8 and use the diaphragm and top plate to make yours adjustable. Been there, done that, it works great!

The stock diaphragm is about 35 bucks at advance auto. The BBK adjustable TPI piece is about 75 bucks.

Good luck!
