Looking to upgrade your ecm?
Let's face it, the stock v6 ecm is useless. Since there's no publicly available aldl definition file for the '302 datalogging is impossible, and unless you have a scanner you're basically blind. But now you have an easy option if you're looking to swap in a better ecm. Take a look ->

Spread the word, I want to get as much interest in this as I can. Mostly to get someone interested in a highway fuel patch for $32B.

Tuneability. The stock ecm (and mask) just can't compare to the '165. The stock ecm only transmits at 160 baud (1 datapoint per 1-2 secs) whereas the '165 transmits at 8192 baud (3-4 datapoints per sec) giving you much more detailed datalogs, the '165 has a much faster processor, the $32B mask gives you the option of using the TPI maf (255 g/sec) or the stock maf (150 g/sec), the ability to use the $6E code which has highway enleanment, both the $32B and $6E masks have been fully dissasembled which means you have complete control of the tune and of course the ability to truly tune as I mentioned above. A big advantage is the potential mileage gains. With the second base bin I worked out you have decel fuel cutoff and decel enleanment activated.

Re: Looking to upgrade your ecm?
So really the big advantage is being able to retune the ECM itself and not having to burn another chip correct? If so I may look into this later on after I build this motor since it would create more power with the right tune.

You still need to burn chips (unless you buy an ostrich from moates.net), the advantage is being able to tune. You really can't do anything with the stock ecm because not much is known about it and there's no way to datalogg with it. Besides, it's just an all around crappy ecm.

Wouldn't the same thing be accomplished by a standalone EFI management solution, such as MegaSquirt?

Re: Looking to upgrade your ecm?
Yes, but cheaper. A '165 is ~$30 at a junkyard + $125 for a burner, chip and aldl cable vs $250(?) for a new megasqirt, and you still need to get something for trans control.
I preffer an oem computer because they have many useful features that aftermarket pieces don't, and because of the infinite tuneability of oem ecm's. Aftermarket computers use encrypted code (to protect the seller) that makes it impossible to create new functions for it. OEM computers have been hacked into to the point that creating new programs or changing old ones however you want is possible. Damn, I wish Grumpy was around, he'd be all over this subject...

Re: Looking to upgrade your ecm?
After a month and alot of gas the final bins are done. These make a great starting point for whatever you plan to do, or as a nice improvement to your basic daily driver. Go take a look.
